A large amount of debris of a four-engine plane can be found from the summit of Tibherine East and several hundred meters down the south side of the peak.
On November 28th, 1969 a four engine Lockheed-749A was carrying weapons and ammunition from Portugal to the Republic of Biafra, a secessionist state in West Africa which existed from 1967 to 1970. During the flight the plane experienced triple engine failure and struck the summit of Tibherine East (3887m) close to Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. All 8 crew and passengers on board were killed in the crash. The wreckage of the plane were discovered by mountaineers in July 1970, eight months later.
