Storfjella and Geitafjella from Vikaneset

Ever since visiting Øyadalen with two colleagues almost exactly three years ago I had wanted to return to ascend Storfjella and Geitafjella . The main reason for waiting this long is that the Stamnes area is not the most easily accessible by public transport, especially during weekends. For this Friday of my summer holiday I therefore first took the train to Dale and from there the bus to Vikaneset (note: bus stop just called Vik).
After getting off the bus, where I had been the only passenger (which would also be the case for the return trip to Dale), I started ascending north along the paved road up Vikadalen. I had not walked for more than a couple of minutes though before seeing the first sign stating that the road was closed! This brought back bad memories from my failed attempt at ascending Matrenipa three years earlier when a closed road had ruined all of my plans. Thankfully, today the sign turned >>>

I had initially only planed to go skiing on the Saturday , but when Fjellsamleren (Endre Myrdal Olsen) texted me and asked if I wanted to go skiing on Sunday as well, it only required a quick look at the excellent weather forecast to change my mind. We decided on having a go at the toll road up to Geilane as this should give us easy access to both Blåvasshorgi and Kringdalsnipa , with an added bonus of Hatlekinni for Endre ( which I had already visited once before ).
After paying the 50 kr toll via Vipps at Horvei/Horveid, we followed the steep gravel road to the upper parking lot at Rørgostølen. As expected this parking lot was mainly a private parking lot but there were a couple of guest spots as well.
We quickly put on the climbing skins and could then start skiing direction from the car. The snow was quite hard and icy at the start but as we got higher up this greatly improved and from there on we had near perfect snow conditions for the rest of the >>>

For the second Sunday in a row I was back at Voss on a skiing trip organized by Voss Utferdslag (part of the Norwegian Trekking Association ). In other words, yet another early morning with the train from Bergen at 07:07. At Voss I met up with the others around 09:00 and we car-pooled to Bergesvatnet. Here we parked at Moseheia p-plass before starting our ascent up Bergsskaret just after 10:00.
The visibility would sadly be quite limited throughout most of the trip with a sun that was visible behind the clouds but refused to properly show itself, but overall the visibility was more than good enough to see where we were heading. To more than make up for this though, the ground was covered with at least 20 centimeters of fresh snow.
After later turning east across Flatafjellet, the terrain levelled off and we soon stopped for a quick lunch break before completing the >>>
Five summits west of Vinningsleitet

When Fjellsamleren (Endre Myrdal Olsen) suggested a skiing trip to the five summits east of Vinningsleitet, I of course quickly said yes. (Bonus tip: see this external trip report for a similar skiing trip.) He picked me up early Saturday morning for the drive to Vinningsleitet. We arrived at the small parking lot around 10:00 and were ready to start skiing shortly after. First up was Nonhaugen , which was easily accessed by ascending directly from the parking lot, except for a short descent into the valley between Nonhaugen and Ørnahaugen , and it did not take long before we were standing at the summit.
Throughout the trip there would be a strong and cold wind from north/northeast. It was however mainly coming at us from the side and overall did not present much of an issue. The snow conditions were on the other hand more heavily affected, thus the condition varied greatly, from packed >>>
Slettefjellet via Eikemostølen

I started by taking the train to Dale and from there the bus to Eikemo. As I was the only passenger on the bus (and would be so for the return as well), I got a bit of extra service and was dropped off right at the trailhead (the official stop is just 150 meters earlier though). The start of the trail was clearly visible from the road due the many tree trunks marked with blue paint, although the sign for Eikemostølen shown in arntfla (Arnt Flatmo) 's external trip report from 2005 was now on the ground and hardly visible.
Following the marked trail made it relatively straightforward to ascend to Eikemostølen, however the trail was clearly not very frequently used and a bit weak at times before pretty much disappearing altogether just before reaching Eikemostølen. While the cabin was still standing when Arnt visited it back in 2005, the roof had now caved >>>

After visiting Borninolten (plus Gråfjellet for Fjellsamleren (Endre Myrdal Olsen) ), we drove the short distance to Moseheia where we parked at an unmarked trailhead after first passing through a gate. Unlike the earlier gate at Skarvastølsvegen, this gate did not say anything about limited access, but the parking lot itself was intended for the cabin owners only. There was however plenty of free spaces and we therefore took the chance to leave the car there for our short hike to Såta .
While the trailhead was unmarked, we would soon come across colored trail markers and the trail was, at least initially, of good quality. The trail forked twice and each time we continued on the option heading up Bergsskaret. But when the trail turned weaker and started descending, we instead simply headed off-trail across Brunane towards Såta.
This required a bit of >>>

After yesterday's long hike in Modalen , me and Fjellsamleren (Endre Myrdal Olsen) decided on a shorter trip the next day. We ended up with Bergsdalen, as it required much less driving and included several easily accessible summits that neither of us had yet visited. We started by driving to Bergsvatnet and had intended to cross the bridge next to Bergsfossen where a small parking lot was indicated on the map. But at the end of the bridge there was a gate with a sign stating that continuing was only allowed if given permission. There was however room for a couple of cars next to the main road at the start of the bridge, hence we left the car there and continued on foot.
It did not take long before we came across a trail for Skarvavatnet which we then proceeded to follow assuming it would take us at least part of the way to Borninolten . Soon we however split up as Endre >>>
Bjørndalshesten and Storebrekkuna from Voladammen to Afdal

This Sunday I joined a hike organized by the Norwegian Trekking Association , more specifically Voss Utferdslag , from Voladammen to Afdal. Or rather I mainly joined the bus transportation at the start and end of the hike, as I had in advance gotten the OK to head off on my own in order to visit a couple of new summits in the area. After getting up very early in the morning, I therefore took the train to Voss where I joined up with the rest of hikers just before 09:00.
The drive up the winding gravel road from Brekkhus to Voladammen was described as an attraction in itself by Voss Utferdslag, which was even more true when done in a large bus with lots of narrow turns and two small tunnels that had to be traversed before reaching the parking lot next to the dam . Here I left the rest of the group and continued northwest on my own looking for the trail to Kvitanosi .
At first I struggled >>>

I started by taking the bus to Eidslandet and walking up to the marked trailhead for Eidsstølen that I had used for my earlier hike to Toppfjellet . While the trail quality had not improved since my last visit, the trail was simply now hidden under tall grasses and ferns instead of snow, and it was still not always straightforward to locate the next red marker, the marked trail did make it relatively straightforward to get to Eidsstølen. It does however involve first ascending to the plateau south of Eidsnova before later descending down to the cabin.
From Eidsstølen I turned west and headed off-trail to the extended north-south ridge of Salsfjellet. Ascending to the ridge was overall straightforward, although there may be more direct routes, and I quickly passed over Nordrenakken on my way to the highest point of the ridge at Midtnakken . >>>

After visiting Storhaug and Nesheimsnipa , me and petter (Petter Bjørstad) drove the short distance to Yksendalen for our final short hike of the day. We parked at a gravel-covered area next to the road before getting up to the houses in Yksendalen and from there followed the road towards the houses in search of the newly marked trail that GeirL (Geir Lie) mentioned in his trip report from almost ten years ago . We could not find any traces of this trail though and were left making our own way largely following the outskirts of a field. Shortly after leaving the field, we did however spot the first red trail markers and soon we were on a marked trail that could be followed all the way to the summit. The summit provided much better views than expected, and after a couple of pictures we returned along the same way, once again failing to find the start/end of the trail mentioned by Geir. Maybe >>>
