Cycling: Rallarvegen and Austre Låghellerhøgdane
To take full advantage the warm and sunny weather, I decided to combine a bike ride along Rallarvegen with a visit of Austre Låghellerhøgdane. I had rented a bike in advance which I picked up at Finse after arriving by train from Bergen. Shortly, I was on the bike and cycling northwest along the overall good quality gravel road.
After passing the highest point at Rallarvegen (at 1343 meters) I descended towards Fagernut. Just before getting to the cabin, I left the bike behind for a short off-trail hike to the summit of Austre Låghellerhøgdane. The ascent was straightforward, however finding the exact summit was more tricky with three minor hills to choose from. As usual, I simply visited all of them, before descending along more or less the same route.
Back on the bike, I made a short stop outside Fagernut before continuing on the gravel road to Hallingskeid. Here I made short detours to the DNT cabin with the same name and the train station, the latter of which I had previously only seen from inside the train.
Figuring out that I could catch an earlier train, I picked up the speed, but of course making sure to take it slow when this was required. In the end, I had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery while still getting to the train station at Myrdal with almost half an hour to spare. More than enough time to return the bike and get ready for the train ride home to Bergen.
To conclude, a cycling trip along Rallarvegen can be very highly recommended and can also easily be combined with a visit of Austre Låghellerhøgdane.
