Byrseteggi from Bjørgum to Gjerdåker
Started by taking the train to Voss where I switched to bus and continued southeast in the direction of Granvin and getting off at the bus stop called Bjørgum. From there I followed the roads up to Fennastølen for the real start of the hike. The weather had gradually improved during the ascent, such that when I started the final off-trail ascent to Byrseteggi most of the clouds had disappeared and I could fully enjoy the beautiful fall colors.
The map indicated a trail heading north from Fennastølen but I failed to find any traces of such a trail. However, the final ascent was still straightforward and it did not take long before I arrived at the summit of Byrseteggi. It provided excellent panoramic views, and a great overview of Horndalsnuten and the rest of Raundalsryggen to the northeast/east. Even though the sun was now shining, the wind was quite cold and I therefore did not stay long before starting my descent north into Budalen.
The terrain here did not present any challenges and I arrived at Nyestølen Øst without any issues. From Nyestølen Øst I could follow a trail west until shortly connecting with a gravel road that I proceeded to follow all the way to the shooting range at Skjerve. This part was more enjoyable than expected with lots of very nice views along the way. After a short break at Skjerve I continued north across Raundalselvi and followed a partly private road (where I also included a brief visit of the motorsport arena at Kyrkjeteigen) to Ygre. Upon reaching the main road I made a short detour to Ygre train station before following the road west to the tiny train station at Gjerdåker from where I took the train back to Bergen.
To summarize, an excellent hike that can be highly recommended. The walk along the road from Ygre to Gjerdåker can however be skipped without missing much and would also shorten the hike by around 3 km.
