Raudhaugane, Luranuten and Ramnabergnuten from Finse
After cancelling several skiing trips at Finse over the previous weekends due to bad weather, it was finally time to put the plan into motion. Initially, I had only intended to ascend Ramnabergnuten, but when Petter also wanted to join, we extended the trip given that he had already visited Ramnabergnuten. This also turned out to be a good thing, given that Vy cancelled several trains at the last minute and thus would have left us with way too much time if only visiting one peak.
We started out from Finse shortly before eleven and partly followed the marked route for the roundtrip across Hardangerjøkulen and partly Petter's winter route to Demmevasshytta, which he has used every December for more than 20 years as a tour guide to the "julebord" at Demmevasshytta for DNT fjellsport Bergen.
Upon arriving at the lake northeast of Ramnabergnuten, we left the route to Demmevasshytta and instead rounded the peak on the north and east to begin our route-finding towards Raudhaugane. This did not present any real challenges, although our descent route was probably slightly better. Raudhaugane consisted of two summits of almost identical height, with the northern one, the one without a cairn, being ever so slightly taller (according to hoydedata.no).
After a short break, we turned our attention to Luranuten, which we ascended via Nutavatnet and then along the ridge to the relatively flat summit area. We did not stay long before returning the same way and later reconnecting with the route to/from Demmevasshytta southeast of Ramnabergnuten.
With Petter's experience we easily navigated the potentially difficult ascent (there are also small cairns showing the way) and then split up, with Petter returning directly to Finse, while I made a short detour to the summit of Ramnabergnuten via Ramnaberghytta. Happy to finally having visited Ramnabergnuten, I also started my return to Finse, following pretty much the same route as when coming the other way at the start of the trip.
To conclude, an excellent but long skiing trip that provides great views. Can definetly be recommended. It should however be noted that parts of the route may be prone to avalanches under different conditions and that the route to/from Demmevasshytta may be difficult in poor visibility. In other words, be sure to check the weather forecasts and make sure that you are comfortable finding your way outside the marked winter routes.
