Gulakvila, Kvitebergnova and Flogefjellet from Sollibotn
After travelling 1.5 hours north on the express boat from Bergen, I got off a Sollibotn and continued on foot towards Gulakvila. I only had to walk less than 100 meters along the paved road before switching to a gravel path that took me up to the marked trailhead and a marked trail that could easily be followed via Løypingsåsen to the cabin.
My next goal was Kvitebergnova. In advance I had considered two options: (i) descend to Eivindvik and ascend from Midttun (where I, thanks to Lise Grønbukt's trip report, had learnt about a marked trail) or (ii) head northwest and ascend via Høgefjellet. When arriving at the unnamed 123 lake just northeast of Gulakvila, I however came across a sign for Kvitbergnova that pointed east. Hoping that this would save me an unnecessary detour, I decided to give it a go, even though this trail was not indicated on the map.
At the next intersection there were no signs for Kvitbergnova, and there would not be any for quite some time, but there was a sign for Mikkelfjell (a small hill east of Høgefjellet) which seemed to take me in the right direction. After then passing east of the summit of Blombakkefjellet, I descended into valley south of Kjerringefjellet where I finally came across the next sign for Kvitbergnova and completed the ascent to Midtre Kjerringefjellet, following various small cairns and red trail markers.
Midtre Kjerringefjellet provided excellent views and even a set of outdoor binoculars that I would have utilized more to explore the views had it not been for the cold wind. After a quick look at Sognefjord signalstasjon I turned my focus towards Kjerringefjellet and did my best to follow the trail markers. It was more of a marked route than a trail though, i.e. hard to follow, and when the main trail turned north towards Sagefjellet and Dingja, I gave up on the markers and headed off-trail towards the summit.
The last part of the ascent to Kjerringefjellet was overall straightforward and I soon arrived at the summit without any issues. Excellent panoramic views but once more the cold wind resulted in a short stop before turning south and beginning the descent to Midttun. The expected marked trail was rather difficult to follow though and I constantly had to check Lise's track. Maybe the trail is easier to follow when ascending or during other parts of the year? The trail did get easier to follow towards the end though. (I also came across a marked trail seemingly heading more directly towards Midttunvatnet. So if you want to avoid going through the farmland at Midttun this trail could maybe be an option?)
Given that hike so far had taking longer than expected, or maybe my plan had been too ambitious, it was not looking good for my hope to also ascend Svabergfjellet, especially as I could not risk not making the boat back to Bergen. But I thought I'd still give it a go. I could always turn back if I running out of time. After a short walk along the roads I therefore started the ascent to Flogefjellet. First along a tractor road and then on a relatively steep trail with gradually improving views.
Upon arriving at the cairn at Flogefjellet, the summit of Svabergfjellet still looked very far away and I sadly had to conclude that it would have to wait for future hike. I still continued a bit further east such that I could look down at Tusenårstaden Gulating. Here I also had a lunch break before returning the same way to Undertun.
All that remained was the walk back along the main road to Sollibotn, with a tiny bit of sightseeing in Eivindvik along the way. In the end I had about half an hour to wait for the boat. And while I could have sped up quite a bit if needed, it would most likely still not have been enough if I had included the extra distance to and from Svabergfjellet. In other words, I made the right choice to turn back.
In summary, an enjoyable hike with great views but with highly variable quality of both trails and trail markers. Overall, this was not a major issue though as the terrain was generally easy to navigate. And the trip would of course have been even better if I had had just a bit more time before having to catch the boat back to Bergen. On the positive side, I'm already look forward to returning to finish the roundtrip at Svabergfjellet.
