Trip Summary
Expecting some nice weather on this Saturday, we aimed at a nice hike not too far from Vienna. After comparing a few opportunities, we ended up with driving to Ebenwaldhöhe in the west of Kleinzell and hiking from there to Reisalpe, also including an ascent to Hochstaff "on the way". For some 400 meters, we first followed a simple road, mostly in southern direction, across Ebenwaldhöhe, before then deviating from the main track (which leads around Hochstaff on its northwestern side) to include an ascent to Hochstaff, also. This route is not exactly well marked and one better knows where to go; despite of this detail, however, it's still all on proper trails to get up to Hochstaff from Ebenwaldhöhe (the ascent to Hochstaff is quite steep, but still nicely within "regular hiking" limits). Once on the northeastern ridge of Hochstaff, one then also enjoys nice views repeatedly; so including Hochstaff on the way to Reisalpe is definitely recommended! :-) Also from the top of Hochstaff, one has very nice views! :-) To continue from Hochstaff to Reisalpe, one first needs to get down to the Kleinzeller Hinteralm, which isn't difficult, really, but needs a bit of a detective mode in one or two places to find it. Also, this descend does have its kind of steep stretches; so a bit of care is recommended, of course. Down at the Kleinzeller Hinteralm, one then continues for a short stretch on a simple road, again, before starting the ascent to Reisalpe "for real" (this ascent is a nice, regular ascent; not too steep and all on a nice hiking trail). At Reisalpe, we used the opportunity to refill some energy at the Reisalpen Schutzhaus, before returning back to Ebenwaldhöhe basically along the same route (with the exception of not again including Hochstaff but instead passing around it in its north). All in all, a very nice day and a very nice hike! :-)
