On recommendation from a climbing friend, I chose to take a hike up Ben Lui. I was staying at the youth hostel in Crianlarich so it made sense to find something close by. It was a bright and lovely spring morning in the central highlands, and I was very excited to get hiking after a short drive down the road to the car park at Dalrigh, between Crianlarich and Tyndrum. It was about 5 degrees when I left the car park and started on the slightly tedious track leading up beside the Cononish river. It's about 6 or 7km of flat stony track to walk along until you actually start an ascent, but with magnificent views of Ben Lui's eastern face overlooking the route, it wasn't all that bad really. I was overtaken on several occasions by bikers, some with skis fixed to their rucksacks and some without >>>
Hamperokken

I did this trip with some friends during the EISCAT workshop being held in Tromso. Since there was an afternoon free without any seminars or talks and the weather was forecasted to be warm and amzing all week, we were all psyched up for doing a mountain hike, especially since the three of us had climbed and summited Mont Blanc together only a few weeks earlier. Hamperokken was our destination of desire, and we managed to convince a few other workshop friends to join us too, which was also quite handy because they had a car after having driven from Sodankyla in Finland to Tromso. It was quite an unpleasant start to try and get up and out of the forest and at times too unenjoyable to want to carry on with the hike, especially since the temperature was in the 20s and there were lots of midges around >>>

It was a beautiful morning to wake up to. Blue skies, minimal cloud on the mountain tops and fresh air. Hanna and I had the room with the view too, which meant we could step out onto the balcony and look straight up to the Aiguille du Midi – what more could you ask for? We met up with Dan and Tobbe at 8.30am for breakfast, so there was plenty of time for us both to shower before that. Unfortunately the 7.50 Euros breakfast proved a little disappointing. Apart from the fresh bread, croissants and coffee, there wasn’t much else on offer to satisfy our hungry hiker’s stomachs! Nevertheless, after we’d finished up in the dining room, we left a bit of kit behind in the hotel and set off for the train station, via the supermarket, to stock up on some food for lunch >>>
Island Peak

After the exceptionally fantastic ascent of Lobuche East on my birthday, we had just one more peak to complete the 4-week trip around the Khumbu region of Nepal: Island Peak.
Wednesday, 19th November 2008: Chukung to Island Peak BC
After sleeping like a log for a decent 10 (or maybe even 11) hours, we began our journey to Island Peak Base Camp from the tea house in Chukhung under increasingly overcast skies, so it didn’t feel as warm as the previous day. It was a short 3-hour walk, which was immensely busy with climbing groups in comparison to the BC for Lobuche East . Once we arrived there was a luxurious mess tent waiting for us to dive into for hot drinks and lunch! It was kitted out with big, roomy chairs and a table laden with a huge selection of instant hot drinks :-) Amongst the selection of hot drinks were >>>

First few days of acclimatisation in the Ishinca valley
Wednesday, 5th July 2006: Huaraz – Pashpa – Ishinca base camp (4390m)
The first part of our journey involved a bus journey from Huaraz to Pashpa. The roads weren’t great but we had many interesting sights along the way, passing some tree plantations and people working or walking along the roadside. They seemed to be very cheerful and friendly and gave us a wave or smiled as we drove past.
After arriving in Pashpa and sorting out the mules, which were carrying some of our kit to the camp we began the trek at about 10am. It was pretty ok and grassy to walk on, but immensely hot. The views across to Huascaran and the surrounding peaks of Huandoy and Chopicalqui were unbeatable though and we took our time to fully appreciate the scenery >>>
