I had a 24 hour stopover at Lønsdal while making my way from London via Oslo to Tromsø by train and ship for a voyage to Svalbard.

Although the weather at Lønsdal was cold (1-2C, or -6 with wind chill - just a week or so earlier it had been 27C there, apparently) with frequent sleet showers, I couldn't resist the opportunity to head for the hills and ascend Kjemåfjellet (972m), starting at Lønsdal station (523m). Although there are only a few trains a day in each direction, the station is permanently staffed, and the lady there kindly looked after my large rucksack while I was out walking, and gave me a free cup of coffee on my return!

The first part of the route was on a marked path, where blobs of red paint on rocks and trees made route finding a doddle. Later it was necessary to leave the path and head up the mountainside, taking extra care when crossing icy snowfields. At the summit there was a howling blizzard, so no time for a selfie, just a quick photo of the cairn - where a reindeer antler was lying.

I returned to Lønsdal in time for the afternoon train to Bodø (from Trondheim).

The 15:43 train to Bodø arrives at Lønsdal. Kjemåfjellet (972m) is in the background.
