Middagsnuten and Nonsnut
After a long bus ride from Bergen to Odda, I got off at Smørtjørnsmoen from where I could follow a side road up through Middagsnuten Hyttefelt. I then continued on a snow-covered trail to a small building with a large antenna near the summit of Middagsnuten. Before heading to the real summit around 60 meters south of the antenna, I also made a quick visit of the trig marker to the northeast. Excellent views from all locations.
Next, I turned my attention towards Nonsnut and immediately started wondering why this peaks looked much bigger than expected. It was only supposed to be around 30 meters higher and only 700 meters away from my current location but it looked both much higher and much further away. In any case, I first had to descend to the cabins in the valley between the two peaks. Except for initial knee-deep snow, this turned out to be pretty easy and did not present any real challenges.
During the descent it also became clear that Nonsnut had performed the unusual illusion of hiding in front of something bigger! The peak I had mistaken for Nonsnut turned out to be Øktarenuten! A peak that was more than 2 km further away and around 300 meters higher, but in my defense the lighting conditions did not work in my favor with regards to being able to separate the two peaks.
The ascent to Nonsnut included a steepish section early on and deep snow towards the end but was overall straightforward and the summit was reached without any difficulties. Excellent views from this summit as well and to get the best possible pictures I waited for a couple of minutes extra for the sun to reappear before returning the same way.
Back in the valley, I connected with a trail that I attempted to follow north through Skaret. This is probably straightforward under other conditions, but the surprising amounts of snow still left behind made it slightly more tricky. In the end I connected with a tractor road, I however left it right away and instead followed a trail heading more directly to the road. After passing under the main road via a small tunnel, I followed various trails/tractor roads until connecting with a gravel road north of Øyna. From there on it was simply a matter of following the roads to the bus stop at Skarsmoen.
All in all, I nice short hike with great views. And although most people will probably ascend these peaks via two separate hikes, my route can also be recommend as it provides a nice way of visiting both summits without having to bring a car or without having to walk a single meter along the busy main road.
