Snow on the last day of June on Snøhetta (30.06.2024)

Bus to Snøheim, waymarked path across tundra then boulderfield on ridge to summit. Low cloud and sleet and snow. Return similar route.
The bus took us 15 kilometres up a dirt track to Snøheim. On the way we saw a merlin mobbing a golden eagle and then the musk ox herd in the distance. There was snow bunting and ringed plover at Snøheim. The surroundings were cold and bleak. The bus display showed 4° outside before we got off.
We set off on the trail at 9:00am. It was marked with metal poles and red Ts round the lake and then gently across the tundra. We reached the ruin of Gamle Reinheim in one hour. The rest of the route was up a boulder field marked with metal poles. There were almost no plants, the only bird a common gull.
Cloud on the peak ahead cleared briefly before we reached it. A round concrete pillar appeared on the top. At last we could walk on old snow on the remains of a cornice instead of the boulders. The summit was very cold with several buildings on it. There was a structure like a trig point, a large built-up cairn, and a viewpoint indicator. These were all totally dwarfed by the concrete pillar and its stone-built footings. Another building beyond this was also inaccessible. It appeared to have a helipad on it.
There were quite a few other people there. We arrived at 12:00. The cloud was thin enough to see under it but when it started snowing dry pellets the view was obscured. The snow continued on our descent, producing proper snowflakes for a while.
I counted 70 posts marking the route from the summit down to the parting of the ways at 2000 metres and another 48 down to Gamle Reinheim. We went across country, finding a river spreading through rocks and active ground polygons which seemed to be spreading from the middle. The operation of tundra processes by ground ice was very clear.
We were at the hostel at 16:10 but couldn't pay for coffee which needed either Vipps or a Norwegian card, so we waited for the bus at 17:00 and took it back to the Hageseter.
