Skiing: Flakavassnutane and Såtehjallane from Finse
Two days after my skiing trip from Hallingskeid to Nyrjuven I was back on the train from Bergen but this time taking the train one stop further and getting off at Finse. After safely crossing the train tracks I put on the skis and started on the marked winter route to Klemsbu. Around 1 km before the cabin I however left the marked route and headed more directly northeast towards Flakavassnutane.
South of the summit I shortly reconnected with the marked route before finding my own way to the top, arriving at the large cairn without any difficulties. Excellent views from the summit, even though the sunshine promised by the weather forecast never materialized. A cold wind resulted in a short stay and after a couple of pictures I descended along the same route before following the marked route west to Klemsbu.
I had initially considered to also include Vargabreen on today's trip but given the suboptimal weather conditions and the gray clouds sometimes making it hard to read the snow-covered terrain, I decided to instead head directly towards Såtehjallane. No marked route here but the terrain was easy and I quickly arrived at the start of the ascent to the highest point of Såtehjallane, having just crossed another marked winter route in the valley east of the summit.
The final ascent was straightforward and I soon arrived at the small cairn marking the highest point. Excellent views here as well, but again the low-hanging clouds and the missing sun did not help. Once more the cold wind resulted in a short stay and I quickly descending along the same route. After a short break and a quick bite I followed the above-mentioned marked route back to Finse, where I arrived with around an hour to spare before the train home to Bergen.
In summary, both Flakavassnutane and Såtehjallane can easily by visited on skis from Finse. In fact, one can stick to marked winter routes for most of the trip and the few steep areas, mainly close to Flakavassnutane, can be avoided without much difficulty.
