Cycling: Herdla from Kleppestø
An extended cycling trip with the main objective of exploring Herdla. I started by cycling to Strandkaien and from there taking the high-speed ferry to Kleppestø. Here I turned on the GPS tracking and headed north towards Herdla, via the road to Erdal and Ask, thus avoiding the heavier traffic on the main road via Ravnanger. The road itself was also a positive surprise, as due to recent road work, I could stay off the road almost all the way to Ask, and instead use the wide sidewalk/walking and cycling path next to the road.
However, from Ask until connecting with the main road at Åsebø, there were no sidewalks, but also very limited traffic, hence this was not an issue at all. The traffic greatly increased as I turned north at Åsebø though, but when approaching Fauskanger the sidewalk/walking and cycling paths reappeared, and from there on continued more or less uninterrupted all the way to Herdla.
At Herdla, I started by walking up to Nordre Signalen for some excellent panoramic views, before making a quick visit to the slightly higher point less than 100 meters to the southeast. Both could be easily reached, but the former clearly provided the best views. Next, I made a short detour west to Gavlevika, before heading east to Storekalvsøyna.
I cycled as far as I could, and then headed off-trail on foot towards the summit. Soon I however came across a weak trail marked with blue paint, which made the progress slightly easier. The marked trail however did not go all the way to the summit, and another off-trail push was needed at the end. Very limited views from the summit though, and generally not really worth visiting.
Given the less than positive experience at Storekalvsøyna, I decided to skip the planned visit of Småkalvsøyna, and instead headed for Vestre Fjæra, based on a tip from ut.no: Rullesteinstur på Herdla. This turned out to be a much nicer experience and a good location for my late lunch break. After that, all that remained was the long cycling trip back to Bergen, following the same route, but this time cycling all the way home without taking the ferry.
In summary, an excellent cycling trip that can be highly recommended. If you think the cycling part is too long, a visit to Herdla can also be recommended as its own trip, as it can also be reached by car or bus.
