Åborsdalstinden (02.05.2020)  

We had originally planned to ascend Bjørnskarstinden via the north facing gully, but due to large cornices hanging over the route, we headed up Åborsdalstinden instead.

We parked at Nordre Åbordsneset and made tracks up on the right hand side of the river. After coming up on the ridge, we headed west in the valley and towards Soltindan. Once we got to the skare between Bjørnskarstinden and Åborsdalstinden, we could see huge cornices hanging over the east side of Soltindan and over the gully we were planning to ascend. With the first warm day in...forever? and sun, we decided today was not the day to be under so many cornices. We had around 400m of elevation to reach the summit of Åborsdalstinden, directly on our right, so we headed up there. Terrain between 30-40 degrees made for some steep kick turns, but the snow was softening into nice spring slush. Once we came to the ridge, we saw traversing to the ´real´ summit wasn't going to be possible due to the large amount of snow on the ridge. We compared with photos from a report written by kugo10 (Kent Hugo Norheim), whose visit was around 1 week earlier a few years back, and the ridge was almost unrecognizable with the huge cornice that had built up this year. Stunning views of Soltindan and across to Lyngen. We settled for the ski summit and followed more or less the same path down, rewarded with awesome spring snow all the way back to the car. Lovely with a trip that was a bit shorter after our efforts in Lyngen earlier this week..
