This hike was stunning!
We began by camping at Lago Gutierrez and following the signs along a nice path through the forrest. The first 5km were pretty flat and we didn't start gaining elevation until we had been walking for 1 hour or so. A really hot day, so we were glad wherever there was tree shelter, though the trail became sandy as we started gaining elevation and I could feel my pasty skin starting to burn to a crisp! The views got more and more impressive as we looked out over a beautiful lake and soon we hit snow, which was fun and a new experience for me to walk in. Paal had a good laugh at how many times I fell over! Soon we could see Refugio Frey and the beautiful, spiky tops of Cerro Catedral - Paal was really hanging out for his skiis! Pretty late in the season but still lots of skiiable snow at that altitude. We had a nice long lunch break and then started the long walk back to the car, where I bought some well deserved fresh Churros of a local (yum!).
This hike really surprised us, we weren't expecting anything special but it was beautiful! GPS tracking is only on the way up, my watch ran out of battery.
