Started the weekend early to take advantage of what looked like the last day of great hiking weather for a while. Endre picked me up at my place shortly before three and together we drove to Øvstedalen north of Bolstadøyri. Here we parked at a small parking lot southwest from Mæland and started on the tractor road indicated on the map. This turned out to be a marked trail that took us all the way to Mælandsstølen . Here the trail ended but it was straightforward to ascend the rest of the way to the summit in open terrain. On our way to the highest point we passed by Rjupetjørni and after crossing a couple of patches of snow we arrived at the unmarked summit of Noltane . After a short break to enjoy the excellent panoramic views we descended along the same route. In summary, a great hike with excellent views that can be highly recommended. (Note that the gravel >>>

Given that my only meeting on a sunny Friday had been postponed earlier in the week, I took the rest of the urgent paperwork with me and hopped on a train to Voss from where I took the bus to Granvin to ascend Oksen . After getting off the bus, I walked to the marked trailhead at Røynstrand and then followed the marked trail northwest towards the summit with the first patches of snow appearing just below 900 meters above sea level. Shortly before getting to Oksatjørni I lost the red markers and given that I did not like the look of the terrain where the trail was supposedly heading, both steep and snow-covered, I made a short detour east to connect with the trail coming down from Ingebjørgfjellet , before both trails combined northeast of Larsbu. The final ascent to the summit was straightforward but quite strenuous >>>

Three weeks after my ascents of Flakavassnutane and Såtehjallane I was back at Finse for what would most likely be the last skiing trip of the season. After safely crossing to the other side of the train tracks, I started on the marked winter route towards Geiterygghytta before later turning west in Såtedalen and briefly following the marked winter route to Hallingskeid. The final off-trail ascent to the highest point at Vargabreen was straightforward and it was easy to find a route that avoided all of the steeper areas. After a lunch break at the summit I made the short detour north to the only slightly lower northern summit before turning back and descending along the same route. A descent that turned out a bit more complicated than expected given that I at the top had discovered that the soles of my ski boots, which were only two years old, were in the process of detaching from the rest of the >>>

Samlen from Herand

Started by taking an early bus from Bergen to Norheimsund to catch the express boat at 09:00. While the boat continued all the way to Eidfjord, I got off at the first stop and was finally ready to begin my ascent of Samlen from Herand shortly before 09:30. To get to the trailhead east of the summit, I followed the paved road northeastward for roughly an hour. At the trailhead I was welcomed by a message that the trail to Samlen had gotten a new starting point in relation to Hardangertrappa (a new route including stone steps that is in the process of being completed). Hoping that the sign did not indicate that the older trail was no longer usable, I continued my ascent, and while the trail was a bit steep and rough at times, it was overall straightforward to follow. In any case, it did not take very long before the two trails connected, >>>

Two days after my skiing trip from Hallingskeid to Nyrjuven I was back on the train from Bergen but this time taking the train one stop further and getting off at Finse . After safely crossing the train tracks I put on the skis and started on the marked winter route to Klemsbu . Around 1 km before the cabin I however left the marked route and headed more directly northeast towards Flakavassnutane . South of the summit I shortly reconnected with the marked route before finding my own way to the top, arriving at the large cairn without any difficulties. Excellent views from the summit, even though the sunshine promised by the weather forecast never materialized. A cold wind resulted in a short stay and after a couple of pictures I descended along the same route before following the marked route west to Klemsbu. I had initially considered to also include Vargabreen on today's trip >>>

After spending the first half of Easter in Sogndal, I was now back in Bergen and after a night at home I got up early to take the train to Hallingskeid with the plan to ski to Nyrjuven/Osaskavlen . The sun was shining when the train arrived at Hallingskeid and I could put on the skis immediately after exiting the station from where I headed towards the bridge across Moldo . Given the issues I had had with the missing summer bridge during my recent attempt to cross the river south of Mjølfjell (which I later learnt opened just three days later…), I had in advance made sure that the bridge would in fact be there this time around , and could this easily cross to the other side. Safely across the river, I continued west along Buadalen where I pretty much followed the marked summer route to Osa/Rembesdalsseter until getting to the unnamed 1272 lake southwest of Daurmålsvatnet. From there it was simply a matter of navigating more or less directly west towards >>>

I got up early Saturday morning to catch the first train from Bergen to Mjølfjell where I arrived at 09:00. My plan had been to walk south from the station and cross the river via the bridge to Urlandsstølen to start my ascent to Nordbotnnuten . When getting there I however quickly realized that this would not be possible. The bridge had been taken down for the winter ! I therefore had to come up with an alternative plan to get to the other side. I found two options: the bridge to Hagen (around 1.5 km walk to the southwest) or the bridge at Hellene (around 2 km walk to the east). While the former was a shorter walk and definitely included a permanent bridge, I still decided on Hellene as the terrain from there to Rundavatnet (to connect with my planned ascent route to Nordbotnnuten) looked easier. Upon arriving at Hellene I was therefore very happy to find that this bridge was >>>

Strong winds at high altitudes made me postpone my planned skiing trip. To enjoy the otherwise excellent weather I therefore instead went for a long 3.5-hour bus ride to Odda to ascend Stølsnuten . When finally getting off the bus at Sandvin I was welcomed by signs of "Private road" and "No trespassing” but concluded that walking along the gravel roads should still be ok and continued across the bridge. The start of the steep and relatively rough gravel road up the unmarked trailhead was easily located and when the road ended I continued on an equally steep trail heading to Lauvås . When the trail later split (more clearly on the map than in reality), I followed the weaker of the two options and headed more directly towards Storenuten . This involved a tiny bit of easy scrambling but all of the potentially >>>

Morkafjellet from Verpelstad

After three days on the couch due to a bad cold, I recovered just in time for a short Saturday hike to Morkafjellet with Petter and Endre . Petter picked me up at my place at 08:00 and we met up with Endre at the surprisingly large parking lot at Verpelstad a bit more than an hour later. Thanks to an external report we easily located the unmarked trailhead behind the houses just northeast of the parking lot and from there followed a partially marked trail all the way to Verpelstadstølen (except for doing our own "shortcut" just below the cabin when briefly losing the trail, see the return track for the correct route). From Verpelstadstølen there was a weaker trail up the first steep slope but soon we were simply making our own way towards the summit. There were several large patches of snow that had to be crossed but there was significantly less snow than expected for the middle of >>>

After the hike to Kjøroldenuten and Nosafjellet , Petter and I drove the short distance south to the top of Jordalstunnelen. Here we found parking next to the road and followed a similar shortcut as other hikers have done in order to quickly connect with the trail to Jordalsnuten . This included a short off-trail ascent starting from just west of the tunnel opening but it did not take long before we located the trail which could then easily be followed all the way to Hyllandsskaret . While we had started out in quite dense fog, we climbed out of the fog long before getting to Hyllandsskaret and could thus enjoy the spectacular views. The views were of course made even more special by the dense fog covering the valleys below us. From there, the final distance to the summit was straightforward for more outstanding views. After lots of pictures we returned the same way >>>
