Synnevaskjer from Rindabotn

I followed the marked ski trail to Høgehaug but turned north just before reaching the summit, passing by the Red Cross cabin Britabu next to Britasteinen, from where I started the real ascent to Synnevaskjer . There were a couple of old tracks in the snow that I could follow, but when the these split I chose the wrong tracks and ended up with a minor detour before finally heading around Vetla Trastadalsvatnet on the northern side as planned. Upon entering the narrow valley of Trastadalen I was a bit concerned about the overhanging snow on the western side of the valley, but thankfully there was much less snow on the eastern side and I thus made it to Store Trastadalsvatnet without any issues. But clearly a spot to watch out for if visiting under more challenging conditions! With the most uncertain section of the route out >>>

Started on the marked trail from Rindabotn but soon took a shortcut up to Skavasshaugane before reconnecting with the trail until reaching the cabins south of Reppanipa . From there we more or less followed the ridge towards Dyrhovden . The trig marker east of the summit had fallen down and the remains were only partly visible from the south. After a quick lunch at the summit we followed the same route back down to Rindabotn.

Ever since the earlier attempt to reach Kvitanosi was abandoned only 500 meters from the summit , I had been waiting for another opportunity. And with a near perfect weather forecast for skiing, I managed to convince a colleague of mine to join. Also this time the trip started from Gullbrå, but the light rain, wind and dense fog from the last visit was today replaced by blue skis and next to no wind. Quite cold when leaving Gullbrå (-11 degrees), but we quickly got warm when starting the steep climb and leaving the shade behind. We were clearly not alone in thinking that this day was a good day for skiing to Kvitanosi , as there were fresh tracks by several skiers that we could follow on our way up the mountain, and with 10-15 centimeters of new snow, we were more than happy to follow in their tracks instead of having to make our own. After the initial >>>

We parked at the small parking lot east of Vesletjørni and from there followed the marked trail towards Vending . Not the best skiing conditions, icy and with lots of areas already running low on snow, and with next to no wind and the sun peeking through the clouds it felt more like Easter than the late February the calendar was indicating. After passing east of Vending, we skied down to the small cabin in Fugladalen, where we had a quick lunch before starting the climb up to Fossavatnet. From Fossavatnet we followed the river up to Øvre Fugladalsvatnet, thus avoiding the steepest sections at the bottom of the valley up from Fossavatnet. Note that one should be careful with regards to the snow conditions when heading up this relatively narrow gorge. Very low risk for avalanches this Sunday though, >>>

Kvitanosi (almost...) from Gullbrå

Trip organized by the Norwegian Trekking Association which started by carpooling to Gullbrå. Light rain at the start of the trip and increasing winds as we made our way up towards Kvitanosi . Sadly, part of the group made much slower progress than expected and with just around 500 meters to the summit (and less than 100 vertical meters to climb), it was decided that we would have to start our descent in order to make it down before it got dark. By then the conditions had also gotten worse, with very limited visibility due to a rather dense fog. Splitting the group was therefore not really an option. Hence my main goal of the day had to be abandoned. But in the end it probably turned out to be the right choice, as it started to get dark before the last member of our group made it back down to the parking lot. The weather did however >>>

Across Vidden from Fløyen to Grøvlevatnet

Started from the upper station of Fløibanen and from there followed the usual skiing route to Rundemanen . Although there had been some new snow since my last visit, there actually seemed to be even less snow at Rundemanen, and the skis had to come off to reach the summit. I did manage to ski down Hyttelien and up to Øvre Jordalsvatnet, but also here there seemed to be even less snow than one week earlier. From Øvre Jordalsvatnet I followed the skiing route up the valley to east of the main trail across Vidden. A bit more snow here, but a lot more was needed here as well. Upon reaching the plateau, the conditions were overall ok, but also here mixed with shorter sections with either very little snow or with more ice than snow. (The latter was in particular the case for the area around Hauggjelsvarden .) After first >>>

Started from the upper station of Fløibanen and from there followed the usual skiing route to Rundemanen . Less snow than I had hoped for the last stretch to Rundemanen (and no snow at all at the summit itself). Getting down Hyttelien also required going more back and forth than usual in order to avoid areas with rocks and/or grass peaking up through the snow. The conditions improved slightly toward Jordalsskaret, but as I turned southeast the snow was more or less completely replaced by ice or grass. Upon reaching the plateau northwest of Øvre Jordalsvatnet the conditions again improved, but on my way up to Dyrhovda , and later to Vikinghytten , there were still plenty of areas that could do with a lot more snow. After a short visit to Arnahytten , I passed by Vikinghytten before making my own shortcut down to Tranehytten and Gangerolf , and with this >>>

Short skiing trip at Vikafjellet on the way home to Bergen from Sogndal. Not the best skiing conditions, and plenty of areas without little or no snow (including the summit), but still quite enjoyable and a welcomed break from the driving.

Bakkanosi and Fetanipa

21,2km

Trip organized by the Norwegian Trekking Association which started by taking the train to Voss and then a joint taxi to Jordalen. We followed the standard route to Bakkanosi , which started out a bit steep along a snow-covered tractor road before levelling off through Slettedalen and the final ascent towards the summit. The summit itself was quickly passed as we moved closer to the edge for better views. Although getting close the 1300 meters vertical drop down to Nærøyfjorden had to wait for later a summer visit, as the snow made it impossible to see where the firm ground ended, the views were still quite spectacular, but slightly reduced due to a light haze in the distance. After lunch, half of us made a detour to Fetanipa , where the views could not compare with Bakkanosi. Perhaps explaining why there have been so few registered visits on >>>

Given that the recent attempt to reach Torstadnakken had to be abandoned due to bad weather it was time for another try. This time with perfect skiing conditions: blue skies and close to no wind. (The only exception being the first stretch up from Svedal where there was more ice than snow. This did improve somewhat for the return though.) We followed the standard route from Svedal up to Grøssete , where the views were much better than last time, and after a quick lunch we continued along the tracks of previous skiers towards Torstadnakken , enjoying the excellent views in all directions. After visiting all of the three cairns at Torstadnakken, we quickly removed the climbing skins and started our descent, deciding to delay our break as it was now getting rather cold at the summit area. There would be more than enough continuous downhill skiing before >>>
