After visiting Sundnessåta , we drove the short distance north to the small parking lot south of Landåsen . From there we followed a tractor road almost all the way to the summit which turned into a trail towards the end. Rather limited views, both from the summit and along the way, hence we did not stay long before following an alternative and slightly more direct route back to the car. Interestingly, this alternative route was marked by an arrow at the summit and was overall easy to follow, but it was not indicated on the map displayed at the trailhead. Overall, not the most interesting hike, but at least it was straightforward to reach the summit.

Another Sunday of hiking with petter (Petter Bjørstad) . This time we decided to stay below the snow and head to Halsnøya and Husnes in Kvinnherad. Petter picked me up at 06:00 and we arrived at Gjermundshamn with plenty of time to spare for the first ferry to Årsnes at 07:45. At 09:00 we were finally ready to start hiking towards Sundnessåta . Marked and easy to follow trails all the way to the summit, with a short steep section at the end. Limited views from the summit itself, but much better views could be obtained from just southwest of the summit and from a viewpoint further northeast. From the summit we returned along the same route to the parking lot. A nice short hike that can definitely be recommended.

After work I took the bus to Sædalen for a short hike via Gløvrehaugen back to Haukeland sykehus. Including a visit of Gløvrehaugen søyle and a (for me) new trail starting from the top of Sædalssvingene.

Modalen is not the most easily accessible area by public transport. Therefore, the natural starting point for a hike to Raunefjellet , i.e. the gravel road heading north from Stølen just southwest of the summit, was not an option for me and I instead had to start from Gamlesæter in Romarheimsdalen. This would result in a significantly longer hike but at least around half of it would be on trails. I started by taking the express bus to Gamlesæter and from there followed the unmarked trails via Langedalen to Svartholet . Decided to take off my boots when crossing the small river just west of the cabin as it was deeper than on my last visit three years earlier . After putting my boots back on I continued east to Eiterdalen . Until now I had been able to follow a trail, although a rather wet and muddy one, however at Eiterdalen the trail pretty much disappeared >>>

As usual after attending a conference at Solstrand , I took a slightly longer detour on the way home than my colleagues. So when they took the bus back to Bergen after lunch I instead took the bus and ferry across the fjord to go hiking in Fusa. After switching buses at “Kilen kryss” I continued on a bus to Sævareid where I turned on the GPS tracking and followed the roads west to Ljotå. My initial plan had been to continue up Ljotådalen for about 1 km and from there head southwest to the summit (as this seemed to be the route of previous hikers). However, when I came across a small bridge on the left-hand side of the tractor road much earlier, I took a gamble that perhaps this would reveal a proper trail to the summit of Håvikemulen . The weak unmarked trail on the other side however soon disappeared, but >>>

After leaving my bike behind at the trailhead for the roundtrip of Frøkjedalsvatnet, I followed the marked trail north along the lake before heading off-trail for the final 500 meters to the summit of Vardafjellet . The terrain was overall easy to traverse, but there were also areas with lots of moss-covered rocks with small gaps between them such that one had to tread carefully. Closer to the summit the terrain turned steeper and there were more trees and bushes to navigate around, but overall the summit was reached without any real issues. Two large old cairns at the Vardafjellet summit, however the actual summit is most likely the area around the tree just behind the largest cairn. The views from the summit where somewhat obscured by trees, but just a couple of meters to the south there were excellent views towards the south. From the summit >>>

Last fall I figured out that it ought to be possible to use the high-speed passenger ferry from Bergen to Rosendal to visit both summits at Snilstveitøy in one hike. This however depended on the ferry's summer timetable and I did not manage try before it was too late. Half a year later it was now finally time to test if the plan could be executed successfully. I started by taking the ferry from Bergen to Snilstveitøy, although I almost ended up at Rosendal as the crew had forgotten that I was supposed to get off at Snilstveitøy (as the only passenger doing so). Thankfully I was able to inform them in time and a quick U-turn took care of the problem. At Snilstveitøy, I followed the gravel road west and soon came across the first sign for Veten . 200 meters later I arrived at the marked trailhead. >>>

I have to admit that peak bagging via public transportation has its added challenges, especially when the distance to the trailhead from the nearest bus stop is almost 9.5 km. But in the case of Storås in Sveio , that distance could thankfully be easily covered by following a side road with limited traffic. The trip started by taking the express bus from Bergen to Sveio and getting off at the stop with the interesting name "Søre Våge sør". I immediately left the main road heading south to Haugesund, and instead turned east on a smaller single-lane road. Soon I even left Sveio, entering Haugesund and Rogaland, and would not reenter Sveio until almost an hour later. On my way I also passed by the trailhead for the highest summit in Haugesund called Klauv , which I planned to ascend on my way back (if time permitted).
