Kongsberg north of Ulvik

With relatively low-hanging clouds, we aimed at a simple hike that would remain beneath the clouds, but still offer some nice views, hopefully. After some consideration, we thought that hiking up to Kongsberg near Ulvik could be a good solution. We took the road up from Ulvik to Aurdal and parked right next to the road right after passing over Verafossen. From there, we then followed a forest road that lead initially into Seljestidalen, before then winding up towards Klyvhals on the southeastern side of this valley. South of Røyneskor, this forest road leads then westwards (to Vestrheimskleppe). There, one eventually gets to see over the treetops further below and down to Ulvikafjorden. To continue further upwards to Kongsberg it is then mostly to just follow the forest road further. >>>
From Odda to Buardalen via Ruklenuten

We wished to make a nice hike from Odda and found Eidesnuten as a worthwhile hiking target, promising nice views in multiple directions. Starting from Eidesåsen, some 250masl and about 150 heights meters above Eide in the south of Odda, we followed a very well-marked trail. Even though one may expect more hikers on such a well-treated trail, we did not meet anyone. Within not too long, we arrived at Eidesnuten and found that our expectations regarding the views were indeed well-founded. Not only could we see northwards and out Hardangerfjorden, north of Odda, as well as southwards, across the large lake Sandvinvatnet, but also we got some nice views over to Buarbreen, already from Eidesnuten. From Eidesnuten, our goal had been to ascend further upwards to Ruklenuten (in the northwest >>>
Vikanuten

We left work early on this Friday and managed to start hiking around 15h15 right next to road #49 in the southwest of Jondal, where Renndalen comes down from Vikanuten. We followed the very well marked trail upwards, first on the east-side of Renndalen. At about 200masl, we crossed Gjelet to the western side of the valley, continuing our (steep) ascent to Vikanuten then this side. The trail upwards is well-marked and easy to find -- it's definitely steep, but no climbing is necessary (near the top, a few times it is helpful to use a hand in addition for additional stability, though). Especially once above the tree line (maybe around 650masl), one can enjoy marvelous views across Hardangerfjorden from this ascent. Roughly 1050masl, one finds a nice cairn which is marking a particularly >>>
Lyderhorn as a nice extra

After first exploring Lysøya and then taking a look at Lyseklosteret , we decided that we were still up for a short visit to Lyderhorn. We parked north of Kjøkkelvikskole (along Gamle Kjøkkelvikveien), and then followed the "standard trail" up to Små-Lyderhorn (via Olderdalen). The last 130 height meters, approximately, are then "straight up" to Lyderhorn in a northwards direction, scaling the rather steep southern side of the mountain. After enjoying some nice views from the top, we then took an alternative route down (first further northwards, down to about 330 masl, before then turning left). While first taking the right turn left, after descending northwards along the main trail from the top of Lyderhorn, we then still got confused (regarding the right spot for starting the off-main-trail descent) and included >>>

After our exploration of Lysøya , we decided to also pay Lyseklosteret a short visit. All in all, this was no more than parking right next to the ruins, walking around them for a while, and then returning to the car -- always nice to look at Lyseklosteret, but not much physical activity! :-)

Exploring (parts of) Lysøya

Even though we knew that Ole Bulls villa would be closed, we still thought that making an excursion to Lysøya could be nice. The ferry took us over to Lysøya from Buena and we started our walk with taking a look at Ole Bulls villa (from the outside, only). From there, we then continued southwards (and upwards) to take a look at a small vista-point ("Udsigten"), before then continuing northwards (and via the heights of Lysøya). This then brought us to the little watch tower ("Tårnet") from which one indeed can enjoy some nice views (over the tree-tops). Thereafter, we walked further northwards in order to take a look at Furulunden (also the highest point on Lysøya). Next on our "ToDo list" was Lysøygrotta, just a little underneath Furulunden (in its west). >>>

After our excursion to Skogsøyna , we decided to also see "the split rock" at Gløvrebu. We parked right next to the cemetary of Hjelme church on Seløyna and followed the main trail out to Gløvrebu, choosing the variant that brings one out to the sea early. At Gløvrebu, we then stepped through the gap in the rock -- as one obviously has to! :-) -- before enjoying the early evening near the coast for some time. To get back to our car, we then followed the trail that "hugs" Ramberget (in the west of Hjelme church).

Skogsøy, always impressive!

Skogsøy is always ("always") a good idea! :-) We parked near the bridge to Herdlevær and followed the main trail to Skogsøytua. There, we explored the wild cliffs before then taking the southern route back to Mjelkevik. From there, we then followed the main trail back to the car. While Skogsøy is no longer as secret a tip as it was before, it's still a very nice hike to an impressive place (where "the last resort" of Norwegian land meets the open North Atlantic)!

With still a couple of daylight hours to go (easy in July around here!), we decided to simply make a short round to Knappen. Evening light is actually quite nice -- also on Knappen! :-)

To get some fresh air in the nice weather, I embarked on a short bike trip with a few small walking bits. I first explored Storåsen on Dolvikhaugene, just to find the "actual top" to be a bit too much within the houses around it. I then visited Skranevatnet in the southwest of Feråsen, which was a nice surprise. Next, I explored Storasåta in the north of Ytrebygsvegen. When approached from the north/northeast, one can actually find a proper trail that leads up to this small hill. Thereafter, I paid Lilandshaugen a short visit, which offers quite some nice views across the airport of Bergen. I improvised my way up, just to then find out that actually there's a convenient road (Lilandsvegen) that leads up to the vista-point. After biking around Lilandshaugen, I then checked >>>
