Biking from Salzburg to Wien 2: Steinbach-Wachau

Dato:
15.08.1996
Turtype:
Sykkeltur
Turlengde:
10:15t
Distanse:
203,6km

After two extra days at Attersee, I finally decided to leave the Salzkammergut and cycle to Vienna, making good distances where possible. Starting in Steinbach am Attersee at about 8am in the morning, I arrived in Weissenkirchen near Wels at about 11:20 (about 74km from Steinbach). Without much delay, I continued further and arrived near Linz at about 1pm (a bit above 100km from Steinbach). Eventually, I made it to Wachau, altogether, accumulating about 200km of cycling on this day (in a little above 10h). Clearly, I tested my limits with this attempt to get as close to Wien as possible. More details about the entire bike-trip are available via a separate web page . Route details about four longer bike rides in/near the Alps are summarized on a separate web page . See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway .

After some nice time in Salzburg, I then started my bike-trip home (from Salzburg to Wien). On the first day, I "just" made it to Attersee, but enjoyed a few extra-turns to see some more places in the particularly nice Salzkammergut, east of Salzburg. After about 115km of cycling, I then came to Steinbach am Attersee, where I stayed for two more days to enjoy the lake and its surrounding a bit further. I started day 3 of this multi-day bike trip in Schwanenstadt, heading towards the nice Salzkammergut. My first target on this day was the lake Attersee and I approached it from its northern side, surrounding Seewalchen in the north and getting close to the lake at about Nussdorf am Attersee (on the western side of the lake). After having cycled along the lake until Unterach, I crossed over to Mondsee, another very nice lake in Salzkammergut. Then, and instead of choosing the shortest path towards Salzburg, I decided to also visit Irrsee, i.e., the third lake along this ride through Salzkammergut. From there, I then changed towards a route, which would bring me to Salzburg in a rather straight-forward way, passing by Wallersee, i.e., the fourth lake to see on this day. Eventually, after >>>

I started day 2 of this multi-day bike trip near Ybbs at the Donau, heading further "upstream" along the Donau. Already early on this day, I came through the nice Strudengau, before coming "back" into a somewhat more open countryside near Wallsee. After some 60km of cycling, I arrived in Mauthausen at about 11:30 taking some extra time at this history-laden(!) place. Back on my bike, I left the Donau not far from Mauthausen and continued along the Traun in southwestern direction. Quite a bit later in the afternoon, I then arrived in Wels for another break. Even later, after also about 150km of cycling on this day, I stopped in Schwanenstadt for the night. More details about the entire bike-trip are available via a separate web page . This longer (several days long) bike trip started in Wien and "upstream" along the Donau (the first stretch was along the Donaukanal until I came to the Donau in the north of Wien. From there, I followed the Donau for a long stretch, first in northern direction, changing more and more into a western direction, arriving in Greifenstein and then in Tulln about 90 minutes after the start in Wien. Continuing further (on the southern side of the Donau), I passed by the never really operated nuclear power plant in Zwentendorf before cycling further. A little more than 3 hours after starting in Wien, I arrived in Traismauer for a first substantial break. From there, my trip brought me further to Krems and Wachau, where I changed to cycle on the northern side of the Donau. I crossed >>>

We started day 4 of this biking tour across the alps in Hallstatt and we knew that this day would be a shorter one ("only" to Attersee, which isn't all that far away from Hallstatt). We first followed the nice lake (on its western side) northwards and then continued along the Traun, which brought us to Bad Ischl quite quickly (about two hours of cycling). Since we were still in the Traun-valley, one last pass (not so very high, though) was still needed to get over to Attersee. We thus first continued to Mitterweissenbach, where we left the Traun-valley and set over to Weissenbach at Attersee, crossing a little pass in between. Once in Weissenbach, it really was not very far anymore to get to Steinbach, where we stopped this four days biking trip across the alps. In total, this >>>

We started day 3 of this biking tour across the alps somewhere between Krakaudorf and Schöder. We first stopped in Schöder to refill some supplies, before then heading for the one bigger pass on this day, i.e., Sölkpass (1790mosl). After about two hours, we happily arrived at this pass, enjoying another great day on our bikes. On the other, northern side, then, we enjoyed a long and nice ride through the Sölk-valley until we arrived at Stein in the Enns-valley. In order to continue on our overall north-oriented route, we immediately left the Enns-valley, again, crossing Mitterberg to the Salza-valley. Coming up to the height of the dam, which holds a substantial amount of Salza-water back, we then followed along the artificial lake for a longer stretch. From nearby Bad Mitterndorf, >>>

We started day 2 of this biking tour across the alps in Winkl near Ebene Reichenau with the goal to traverse the Nockberge first. We thus started on the Nockalmstrasse along the Stangenbach, heading for our first major pass on this tour, Schiesstlscharte (2025mosl). About two hours after starting our day, we eventually arrived at the pass, truly happy in all regards (beautiful nature, great views, and arriving at the pass after a strenuous ride). The next goal was then another nice pass in the Nockberge, not far from Schiesstlscharte, but with a significant "dive" into the Loebengraben in between (500 height meters down and then up again). After another two hours, we then arrived at this other pass, Steigerhöhe, at 2030mosl. All in all, we enjoyed the Nockberge a great lot, >>>

After having taken the train from Wien towards the south/southwest, we started cycling in Friesach. We quickly came into the Metnitz-valley, which we followed upwards in western direction. At the very end of the valley, we included a small detour (up to Flattnitz at 1400mosl), before we rushed down, now in southern direction, into the Glödnitz-valley. For a short stretch, we followed then the Gurk-valley, before changing into northwestern direction (Sirnitz). From there, we then started our ascent to the next pass on this tour, i.e., Hochrindl at 1580mosl. On the other, western side, then, we quickly descended into the Gurk-valley (again) and ended our first day tour in the vicinity of Ebene Reichenau.
