Trip Summary

To include a nice hike had been part of our original plans for our visit to Yakushima. Depending on the circumstances, we also had looked at an ascent to Mt. Miyanoura, the hightest top of Yakushima, but wanted to wait until we would be in a better position to understand the weather, our form, etc. After one nice day of chilling on Yakushima, everything looked good and we made an early start to give us enough time for the there-and-back hike (officially 2*8km according to all signs). To make the actual ascent to Mt. Miyanoura possible for us on this day, we first drove up to the Yodogawa Mountain Trail Entrance at some 1370masl. This drive, already, to the high up end of a narrow mountain road, was a nice experience -- with numerous turns and a close-up impression of the surrounding jungle. From the trail head, we then followed the main trail towards Mt. Miyanoura. Near the Yodogawa Evacuation Hut, we crossed a nice jungle stream, before starting the main portion of the ascent. A few kilometers into the hike, we also used a lookout point to get a nice view of Tofu Rock, not far from the main trail. After about 6km of hiking, the last stretch of the ascent to Mt. Miyanoura started, bring us all the way up to the top of Yakushima! After a nice break on the top, we then followed the main trail back down. At large, this hike was impressive for several reasons. On the one hand, we hiked for a longer time through a rather dense mountain jungle with many impressive, old trees. On the other hand, we got some exciting close-up encounters with the monkeys that live on Yakushima (not too close, though!). Also, we had timed our hike well so that we were able to return well in time before sunset. So, all in all, a fully success! :-)
