Kambafjellet and Blåfjellet
- Date:
- 28.03.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 2:32h
- Distance:
- 12.1km
Started by taking the ski lift from Rindabotn and from the top followed the tracks of previous skiers across Kambafjellet towards Blåfjellet . Upon reaching the large cairn at Blåfjellet I continued east towards the real slightly taller summit. No tracks to follow here. After removing the climbing skins I made my own way down to the Red Cross cabin (called Britabu) located right next to Britastein, before following the standard skiing trail back down to Rindabotn. Overall an excellent trip that can be highly recommended!
Grøssete
- Date:
- 25.03.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 3:55h
- Distance:
- 6.2km
Trip organized by the Norwegian Trekking Association where the goal was to reach Torstadnakken . But due to low-hanging clouds and very poor visibility the trip had to be cut short at Grøssete . Still an enjoyable trip despite the bad weather conditions though.
Across Vidden via Grøvlevatnet and Hauggjelsvarden
- Date:
- 17.03.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 6:43h
- Distance:
- 24.2km
Started by taking the bus to Haukeland sykehus and following the standard route towards Ulriken . More complicated than expected as the gravel road was covered with ice (a theme that would return at the end of the hike...). It improved slightly when I left the main trail for Ulriken, put on the skis, and headed south to Grøvlevatnet, but also here there were stretches with more ice than proper snow.
The original plan had been to follow the summer trail to Turnerhytten , but it seemed like the preferred winter route is a bit further to the east, so I opted for this instead. There were plenty of traces of skiers, but this morning I only met one other skier until I got close to Hauggjelsvarden , but then there were plenty. The route itself was quite nice, with excellent views towards Gullfjellet . I should have brought my full-length climbing >>>
Hjortland to Lønborg
- Date:
- 10.03.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 7:12h
- Distance:
- 22.6km
I was dropped off at the parking lot at Hjortland and from there followed the snow-covered gravel road towards Norhytten (one can also arrive by bus to Flaktveitrinden, but then one has to carry the skis for about 2 km). The trip soon turned into backcountry skiing with only one or two tracks to follow made by earlier skiers.
As I got close to Norhytten these tracks also more or less disappeared, and so did the sun, plus it started snowing lightly, resulting in poor visibility. Still straightforward to reach Norhytten, but from there onwards to Borga it was a bit more complicated, and I had to reduce the speed to ensure that I was on the right course. Not the best views from the summit of Borga today. The visibility improved slightly for the descent, but for safety I still followed my own tracks.
I continued to Vikinghytten , via Grønetua . No tracks >>>
Rundemanen and Kvitebjørnen
- Date:
- 06.03.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 4:09h
- Distance:
- 15.7km
Started from the upper station of Fløibanen and after a quick detour to Skomakerdiket I took the shortest route to Brushytten , from where I followed Blåmansveien to arrive at Rundemanen .
I continued northwest across Kvitebjørnen all the way to Dræggehytten , before turning southeast to Ankerhytten . Here I tried skiing down the shortcut to Munkebotsvatnet, but ended up having to walk the last bit due to too many trees and not enough snow. The trip was completed by putting on the skis again and following Hellemyrstien back to Lønborg.
A very nice trip in perfect winter weather: blue skies and close to no wind. And in areas where there is usually not enough snow for skiing. There could have been just a little bit more snow at times though, as then one would not have to constantly be on the lookout for rocks...
Across Vidden
- Date:
- 27.02.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 5:23h
- Distance:
- 21.4km
Very nice winter weather in downtown Bergen, but as Ulriksbanen approached the upper station we started to see (and feel) the strong winds. (Some fellow skiers even decided to take the cable car back down again.) Luckily we could prepare the skis inside before exiting into the very strong southeastern winds. However, besides the strong winds the conditions were close to perfect, and in the small pockets where we could stay out of the wind it was easy to forget the cold wind and enjoy the views. We followed the standard winter route across Vidden, and after turning north, and later northwest, the wind was no longer a major factor.
After a short lunch break in Hyttelien, we continued to Rundemanen and from there followed Blåmansveien on the way down to Brushytten . At Rundemanen the strong winds could again be felt, but as >>>
Gullfjelltoppen and Kofta
- Date:
- 25.02.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 7:12h
- Distance:
- 22.1km
Trip organized by the Norwegian Trekking Association . We started from the parking lot at Osavatnet on a beautiful and sunny winter day and followed the winter route up Tjørndalen towards Gullfjelltoppen . As we got close to Gullfjellhalsen a relatively dense fog started to appear, however after a short lunch break it cleared enough to continue to Gullfjelltoppen where the views were only partially limited by the fog.
But soon after leaving Gullfjelltoppen the fog reappeared, now even denser than before, and both maps and GPS had to be heavily conferred in order to find the route towards Kofta . In the end we did arrive at the summit of Kofta, although the fog resulted in extremely limited views. We therefore did not stay long and quickly returned the same way.
The initial plan had been to also visit Søre Gullfjelltoppen and Sydpolen , but this was rejected due to the dense fog, and we instead >>>
Bruviknipa: From Båtaleitet to Njåstad
- Date:
- 04.02.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 6:02h
- Distance:
- 16.0km
Trip organized by the Norwegian Trekking Association . Bus from Bergen to Båtaleitet , from where we followed the winter route via Flatafjellet to the summit of Bruviknipa . After a long break at the summit, we retraced our steps (or should I say tracks) across Flatafjellet and from there continued north, including a shorter stop at Geitnipa on the way down to Njåstad, where the bus was waiting to take us back to Bergen. Excellent skiing conditions and beautiful weather made for a close to perfect skiing trip and provided spectacular views, especially from the summit of Bruviknipa. Highly recommended!
Såta, Kvamskogen
- Date:
- 14.01.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 3:23h
- Distance:
- 12.1km
First skiing trip of 2018. Started from the parking lot at Furedalen and followed the standard skiing route to Såta . Very strong winds at the summit so we did not stay long before starting our descent.
First heading east and then south across Breiarusti on the way down to Furedalen. Not the best skiing conditions but overall a very nice trip.
Reppanipa
- Date:
- 15.04.2017
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 2:46h
- Distance:
- 10.2km
Started from the parking lot at Hodlekve and began by following the "lysløype" with some family members, before taking off on my own towards Kollsetestølen. I partly followed some old snow scooter tracks until reaching the cabins at the southern end of Reppanipa . From there I could not find any more tracks towards the summit, but it was fairly easy to find a safe route. After taking lots of pictures, as apparently the only visitor for some time, I followed pretty much the same route back to the parking lot under perfect skiing conditions!
