Kongshaugen i Samdalen

Date:
28.10.2024
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:

Distance:
3.4km

A long detour on the way home from work for a quick visit of Kongshaugen i Samdalen - yet another minor peak on the Alle topper i Bergen list. I got off the bus at Samdal and from there briefly followed the road north in the direction of Bontveit before finding an opening in the barbed wire fence and could then easily complete the short remaining off-trail distance to the summit. The area seemed to be used for grazing animals, most likely horses(?), but thankfully I did not see any this evening. After a couple of pictures, I descended the same way and, given that I still had 35 minutes until the return bus, continued northeast to Hausdal for a closer look at a rather unstable bridge I had seen in an earlier trip report from Helwig . The bridge had not been repaired and to me it seemed safer to instead wade across the river just downstream of the bridge.

Inspired by a recent trip report by Bull , I decided to check out Rislikampen as a potential new addition to the Alle topper i Bergen list. After taking the bus (or rather bus, train and bus) I got off at Søylen from where I started on the trail to Furedalsvatnet. I quickly left this trail though and instead continued on a weak and wet trail towards Rislikampen. The trailhead itself was unmarked and if it had not been for Bull's report I do not think I even would have considered it as the start of a proper trail. Thankfully, the trail soon turned less weak, and especially the part where it headed northeast to the Rislikampen ridge was very easy to follow. Here the trail however pretty much disappeared and I was left finding my own way for the rest of the ascent. But as the direction was pretty obvious now anyway the summit was still reached without >>>

An alternative ascent to Sandviksfjellet where I started on the route up Stoltzekleiven but left the trail around the halfway point. Here I instead followed a weaker and wetter trail southeast underneath the overhead powerlines before later turning north towards the summit when connecting with the trail coming up from Skredderdalen.

Left work early for a windy hike across Løvstakken with a colleague. The GPS had some issues along the way, hence some of the measurements are clearly wrong.

Sunday hike with my dad with the main objective of visiting the trig marker at Kvitnosa . We started by taking the bus to Lone (or rather bus, train and bus) and then followed the road to Borgo. Most hikers here probably take the marked route up to Borgaskaret, but we instead started searching for the trail to Gjøken . Our first attempt ended up on the wrong side of an electric fence, before we, after a bit of backtracking, passed through a gate and could finally begin the ascent. The trail indicated on the map was however not really there and instead it seemed like we were in a field used for grazing cattle. So far we did not see any cattle though and assumed that they had been brought indoors for the winter. After later passing through a second gate, this one open, the weak trail soon pretty much disappeared and we were left >>>

When Endre asked if I wanted to spend the upcoming Saturday hiking in Eidfjord, I of course immediately said yes and we decided on the area between Måbødalen and Simdalen as our target area, as it contained up to five peaks that neither of us had yet visited. Endre therefore picked me up at my place shortly after 08:00 on the Saturday morning and we started our drive to Eidfjord in an unusually dense fog that we could not escape until beginning the ascent up Måbødalen. We parked at the large parking lot along Isdalsvegen and from there followed a trail through a cabin area before connecting with the marked trail to Simadal. Even though it was already late September, the weather was very warm and I soon had to make a stop to change into shorts, and the rest of the hike was carried out in just shorts and t-shirts for both of us. After taking the train from Bergen to Voss and the bus to Oppheim, I got off at Framnes at the southwestern end of Oppheimsvatnet. From there I headed north via Bidne to Svorto. The ascent followed a paved road that gradually turned into a rough tractor road and finally ended up as more of a muddy path. The map indicates a trail heading north/northwest from Svorto, but while I did find an unmarked trail, it was quite weak and I therefore lost it several times. By the time I got close to Såta the trail had completely disappeared and I was left with finding my own way. Såta provided great views and even had its own visitor register. From Såta I made my own way north to the main goal of the day: Tverrfjellet . No trails here as far as I could tell but the terrain was easy to navigate. I made a couple of minor >>>

Skjerjavasshovden from Beinhellervatnet (alternative route)

Distance:
13.5km

Initially, I had other hiking plans this Saturday, but then Endre gave me an offer I simply could not refuse: a ride to Norddalen such that I could visit Skjerjavasshovden . He had already been to Skjerjavasshovden but was going to drive further up Norddalen and kayak across Skjerjavatnet to ascend Trollahorgi and Belaskarhorgi . I was picked up at my place around nine for the drive to Eksingedalen. A trip that turned out a bit longer than necessary as shortly after passing Evanger we realized that we were running low on gas. To be on the safe side we therefore turned back and made an extended detour to Voss to fill the tank. Rather annoying given the numerous gas stations we had passed on our way from Bergen... When finally arriving in Norddalen, Endre dropped me off next to Beinhellervatnet before he continued north to the parking lot at the northeastern end of Skjerjavatnet . I started my >>>

After the drive north from Bergen, Endre and I left the car at the parking lot at the end of the road up to Svartavatnet and started on the marked trail to Vardadalsbu . Upon connecting with the gravel road south of Skjerjevatnet we briefly followed the road southeast before ascending off-trail to the summit of Vest av Trollegilsbotnen . A bit of easy scrambling was required but we reached the summit without any real challenges. Finding the exact summit was more difficult, hence we simply visited all of the likely candidates. Before descending we also made a short detour south to look down into Modalen. After getting back to the gravel road west of Vest av Trollegilsbotnen we followed the road north until reconnecting with the marked trail to Vardadalsbu. Here we left the gravel road and continued on the trail. This would soon lead us across two metal bridges that enabled us to easily cross >>>
