Tricky times on Helgelands-bukken
- Date:
- 14.06.2025
Took the Engabreen ferry and wlked broad track (wished for bikes) to glacier slabs. Marked trail and ropes/chains on rock slabs. Steep marked beaten trail up to ridges below hut. Large snow patches. Went into mist and needed careful navigation. In decreasing visibility, we had long snowy sections and uphill rocky sections. There were hardly any waymarks. We put on stiff boots and crampons and passed a red (waymark) spot. Our phone map was good and I took a rough compass bearing, but could not find more marks. This was getting quite serious. We had to get through to the hut, could not go back (no ferry) and did not know our exact location. We had no foreknowledge of the ground, and there was no trail or footprints. We made a short retreat and repeated one section, and returned to our high point. >>>
Lyshorn says No, Sjursviktinden is straightforward
- Date:
- 31.07.2024
From near Finnjorda by Storvatnet to Lyshorntinden, retreated from connecting ridge to Storvatnet and rejoined main path to Sjursviktinden. Solo.
Husfjellet and Litje Brusen
- Date:
- 27.07.2024
From Skaland by popular waymarked route. Visited neighbouring Litje Brusen on path, scrambling to summit.
Exploring Fjellsendtinden on Kyle, Senja
- Date:
- 25.07.2024
From Fellsenden Tunnel, by S ridge, avoiding one section of scrambling but returning to ridge for summit. Descent to adjacent corrie, col and lake.
With Judith Bullivant.
Middagstind and Glæret above Gryllefjord
- Date:
- 26.07.2023
From Gryllefjord school by waymarked route, up steep wooded then heath slope to lower end of summit ridge, which I followed, steepening and some scrambling, to summit. Amazing inversion conditions. Wish I had had the courage to go beyond the waymarks and turbok to neighbouring summit (Torsken) and complete circuit to Glæret. Returned to foot of ridge and made a
diversion to Glæret. Down path to Gryllefjord.
Prospecting a better route on Tromtind
- Date:
- 25.07.2023
In 2022, we were beaten by Senja pa Langs as we battled down Tromdalen in floods and spates. There must be a better way. On 25/7/23 I went to find out. We booked in to DNT Senjabu.
From Senjabu, first went to visit the river crossing in Tromdalen that had been impossible the previous year. It was easy, and we had coffee sitting on stones in the middle. Then took to a steep untracked hillside through woodland and luxuriant vegetaion to Leirdalsheia. We split up here, Judith going directly to lake at 325m. I took E ridge to Trontind and descended by SW ridge to Leirskaret / Lairevaggi. It was clear this was readily accessible from Senja pa Langs. It would be a preferable alternative in poor weather. Descended to 325m lake and rejoined Judith. Returned to Senjabu via Daudmannsvatnet, three small >>>
Daven, Keipen and Barden
- Date:
- 21.07.2023
Day 1. Approach climb to camp near Daven on moorland between next two days’ mountains.
Day 2. From Daven campsite by steep paths and rocky ridge, then boulderfield paths in coire (bolle-formasjon) to col between two peaks. Climbed to summit of Keipen then traversed easily to Gryttetippen. Descended by route similar to col approach back to campsite.
Day 3. From Daven campsite to ridge towards Barden, some slight scrambling to avoid steep section, all well-shown by paint marks. Ridge climb, avoiding steep peak. Plateau paths to Barden summit. Return by similar route. Picked up camp and descended to tunnel entrance.
Senja pa Langs in the rain
- Date:
- 29.08.2022
Day 1. From camp by Storbunkevatnet over remote heathland into Anderdalen National Park and down to the Gamme (hytte, bothy) above Anderdalen.
Day 2. From Anderdalen by waymarked route over rough mountain terrain and snow fields by Istinden and down to Bumannsvatnet camp. Weather deteriorating.
Day 3. From Bumannsvatnet in constant rain to Tronddalen and increasingly difficult river crossings to incompletely bridged large river Heggelva. Crossed and camped. Abandoned fourth day of trail and took bus next day.
Rather alarmed at such a route and lack of adequate river crossings in Tromdalen. The fourth day would also have finished over a large river by bridge, but we had lost trust in the route.
With Judith Bullivant.
