To Kaizerswaard in Rotterdam and back

Date:
30.06.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
1:30h
Distance:
24.8km

I started from the center of Rotterdam and biked northwards first, crossing the main train station of Rotterdam (through the tunnel). After exploring Provenierssingel a bit, I continued my round via Bergweg to Zwart Janstraat, on which I then cycled into southeastern direction. When crossing the Rotte, I turned into a southern direction and continued until I got to Oudehaven. From there, I followed the Maas river (in eastern direction, mostly), until I came to the large bridge Van Brienenoordbrug. Crossing over the Maas on this bridge, I got myself onto a biking path leading to the park De Twee Heuvels. At Kaizerswaard, I started my return to the center of Rotterdam, first heading towards Lombardijen. Near Spinozapark, I turn right (and into northern direction). After a while, I ended >>>

Exploring Zuiderpark in Rotterdam

Date:
24.06.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
1:00h
Distance:
15.5km

To do a bit of physical work out, we decided to explore Zuiderpark in the south of Rotterdam. To get there, we started in the center of Rotterdam, cycling in southern direction along Westersingel. We then connected to Het Park, before we took the tunnel underneath the Maas river to get to the southern side of Rotterdam. In Oud Charlois, we continued in southwestern direction, parallel to Waalhaven. When getting to Waal, we turned to the left (then in eastern directcion) and started to follow the larger arch of parks, including Zuiderpark and Valkeniersweide. On our way back to Rotterdam, we explored Randweg and Hillevliet, before we got back to Rijnhaven. From there, it was only to cross the bridge Erasmusbrug to complete this loop through the south of Rotterdam. See also the related FB-page >>>

Exploring Middendelfland by bike

Date:
03.06.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
3:00h
Distance:
37.4km

This day, we decided to explore Middendelfland with our bikes. We cycled first northwards from the center of Rotterdam, passing by the airport at its eastern end. From there, we enjoyed our biking across the fields and along the really many canals. The path along Berkelse Zweth, which brought us nearer to Middendelfland (in western direction) was comparably narrow and some care was needed when letting others pass by. Near Zweth we crossed over the canal Delftsche Schie, which we then followed northwards on its western side. Before getting into Delft, we turned left and entered the large park area Abtswoudse Bos on its eastern end. After cycling through the big park, we continued westwards in the south of Abtswoude. When meeting Vlaardingervaart, another big canal, we turned left again >>>

Spiraling out of Rotterdam :-)

Date:
21.05.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
1:30h
Distance:
14.8km

In order do a bit of physical work out, I just took my bike and left the center of Rotterdam without any particular plan. Within short, however, I had the following idea: why not cycling out of Rotterdam in a spiraling pattern?! Obvious idea, of course! :-) So I started cycling/circling around the Cool district of Rotterdam in ever bigger rounds. Eventually, I completed three full turns, seeing a few places in Rotterdam that I had not been to before (nice!). After a short stop at the Walenburg Cafe north of the main train station in Rotterdam, I returned to the center with a smile on my face. :-) See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway . Some information about the Walenburg is available here , here , and here .

Visiting the Japanese garden in Den Haag

Date:
20.05.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
5:00h
Distance:
59.3km

We started from the center of Rotterdam with the goal to see the Janapese Garden in Den Haag, which only is open for a few weeks every year. We started in northern direction, passing by the airport of Rotterdam on its eastern end. From there we cycled across the green region between Rotterdam (in the south), Delft (in the northwest), and Berkel en Rodenrijs (in the east). Coming by numerous canals, we crossed through Delfgauw in the east of Delft from south to north. Soon after, we came by the very nice little lake De Grots Plas, where we stopped to enjoy the view! :-) Thereafter, we continued into the direction of Den Haag, coming through some larger residential areas (not too interesting, after all). After a while, we came to De Vliet, which is a long canal between Delft and Leiden >>>

21.04.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
1:30h
Distance:
25.7km

We started to cycle from the Cool district in Rotterdam, going north and northeast first. Coming through lakes Bergse Achterplas and Bergse Voorplas, we turned right and continued towards the river Rotte. After first following the river for a short distance (in northeastern direction), we crossed over and continued towards the northeastern end of Kralingse Plas. When "touching" the Kralingse Bos, the park around Kralingse Plas, we turned left (into eastern direction) and headed for the Alexander part of Rotterdam. After passing through Prinsenpark, we continued in southeastern direction towards the river Hollandsche IJssel. Instead of crossing over the large Algerabrug, we started our return-trip to the center of Rotterdam (mostly in western direction), following the IJssel river >>>

Cycle round from Rotterdam, including park Bergse Bos

Date:
14.04.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
2:00h
Distance:
29.2km

We started to cycle from the Cool district in Rotterdam, heading for the nice biking paths along the Rotte river (i.e., towards the northeast). After passing by the lake Bergse Voorplas and Prinsenmolen, we continued on the northwestern side of river Rotte (in northeastern direction) in order to get to the park Bergse Bos. Cycling through the park, we got to know it a little. We then continued to Bergschenhoek first (in northern direction), before crossing over (then in northwestern direction) to Berkel en Rodenrijs. Crossing through the settlement, we met the train line at station Berkel-Westpolder. From there, we turned back, i.e., continued in southern direction, towards Rotterdam. Close to the airport of Rotterdam, however, we included a small detour across the fields north of the >>>

Cycling to, in, and from De Biesbosch

Date:
07.04.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
4:00h
Distance:
45.1km

After taking the river boat (Waterbus) from Rotterdam to Dordrecht, we cycled (more or less) directly to Kop van Het Land, where we (after a short break) took the ferry over the river Nieuwe Merwede to the national park Biesbosch (the Brabant part of it). Once on the other side, we first took a turn to the left (north) in order to do a clockwise entry arch into the heart of the national park. Our plan was then to cycle longer through the national park and then take another ferry (over the river Amer) to Lage Zwaluwe. When arriving at the very southwestern end of the national park, however, we had to learn that the ferry was not yet put in service for this summer and we had to change our plans. We thus cycled back along the river Nieuwe Merwede and took the ferry to Kop van Het Land, from >>>

From Rotterdam to Kinderdijk, and back

We took the bikes from Rotterdam downtown and headed first east, then southeast, to get to Kinderdijk, a cultural heritage site (with quite a few traditional windmills). To get back, we changed to the other side of the Noord (and with that to the southern side of the Nieuwe Maas), where we then headed back to Rotterdam. All in all, a very enjoyable bike trip! Exploring the dunes north of Den Haag

01.04.2018
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
4:00h
Distance:
38.5km

We rented bikes from the train station Den Haag HS and biked first through the nice park Haagsche Bosch. We then cycled around the large park of Clingendael, before we entered the dunes in the north of Den Haad near the International Courthouse. We then enjoyed biking northwards (and "around"), getting to the very nice museum Voorlinden. After visiting the museum, we decided to have more of the dunes, before returning our bikes and taking the train home. Really a nice day! Selected photos are available as Google photo album .
