Hjortåsen on Strøno
- Date:
- 07.07.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 2:00h
- Distance:
- 4.4km
We took the car to the south of Bergen, driving then road 160 from Ulven to Strøno. After crossing the narrow bridge to Strøno and driving up just a little to the T-junction, where the streets to Nordstrøno/Sørstrøno split, we turned right (towards Nordstrøno). Only a couple of meters before getting close to the first houses on the north-side of the island, we stopped next to the road and started hiking, following a simple forest road that starts from the street there in southwestern direction. At about 80mosl, where the forest road ends, we then continued on a well-visible path (further up in southern direction). At about 140mosl, we spotted Såta nearby (in northeastern direction) and thought that we may have a nice view from up there. It took only a few minutes to get over (no >>>
Short hike over Vardafjellet
- Date:
- 12.04.2019
- Characteristic:
- Walk
- Duration:
- 0:30h
- Distance:
- 1.4km
After a meeting at Solstrand, I was heading to another meeting in Bergen. Given the beautiful day and half an hour to spare, I decided to include a quick walk over one of the minor peaks near Osøyro: Vardafjellet. I drove up to Øvre Varåsen and found a place to park for half an hour. My plan was then to continue to Varåsgrenda and to take a trail from there (as I had seen it on the map). Walking north on Øvre Varåsen, however, I turned left one street too early. Soon, I understood that this would not lead to the trail, but since I thought that ascending to Vardafjellet should not be too difficult, even without a trail, I continued and indeed found a reasonable opportunity at the back of house 48 (southwest of it). Within a few minutes, I had connected to the trail and then followed >>>
Hiking the southern part of Strøno
- Date:
- 08.09.2018
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 2:30h
- Distance:
- 6.1km
There was not really time for a longer hike and also it was expected that some rather heavy rain may come in the early evening. Therefore, we decided to do something smaller, i.e., a hike over Strøno south of Bergen (and west of Osøyro). We passed Fanafjellet with our car and turned right (westwards) at the military camp at Ulven. Following the street, we soon crossed over the bridge at Hillershavn to Strøno. Once on Strøno, we followed the southern street to Sørstrøno. From there, we started hiking, first following a major gravel road which passes by Strønevågen and Selvågspollen (in their northwest).
Our first goal was Husfjellet, a little hill that stands a bit for its own in the very south of Strøno. We first continued on the gravel road, making a half-circle around the hill >>>
Tverråsen, etc., and Furehaugen, etc.

I drove from Bergen to Os in the south and then further into the direction of Hattvika, where a ferry can take you over to Venjaneset (Fusa). Only a few hundred meter before reaching the ferry stop, I turned left and drove up a little road towards Berge. More or less at the first possibility, I parked and started walking (first following the road further up, in northeastern direction). After passing by the houses at Tussaskarva, I found the spot, where the road crosses a little stream, coming down from the right (east). There, it was possible to leave the road and continue on a simple tractor road in northeastern direction (basically following the stream). At about 120mosl, the valley forks into two and I took the left one, continuing in norther direction. This lead me, as expected, to >>>
To Raudlifjellet and back via Hatlelia
- Date:
- 12.08.2018
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 5:00h
- Distance:
- 10.0km
We had the (kind of ambitious) plan to walk a round over Nordhordlandskulten, descending to the south from it (even though it was unclear from the consulted maps, whether this should be reasonably doable, given the also quite steep side of the mountain there). To have the car at the right side of the mountain, we parked along Gåssandvegen near a place called Haukeland. The first task was to find the path, which would lead northover in order to bring us to a place from which it would be reasonable to cross over to the main path up to Nordhordlandskulten (the standard approach is from Tømmernes, a little further north). After a little bit of searching, we quickly found the track which leads northwards into Vetlaleitet (a quite nice little valley, in fact!). We then also found the tractor >>>
Katlaberget
- Date:
- 21.10.2017
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 2:00h
- Distance:
- 4.5km
We started this little hike on Ferstadvegen in Os, south of Bergen. First we followed the road, which winds left and right into an overall southeastern direction. After a few turns of the road, one can find the first sign, which invites to leave the road and ascend to Katlaberget on a proper path. After all, this would be the spot, where we later come back to the road after our little round over Katlaberget. To actually make this a round, we first continued on the road even further, now going a bit down towards the sea. About two major turns later, we eventually left the road and followed another path, which also leads to the top of Katlaberget. On Katlaberget, we first enjoyed some views from the actual top, before we then followed "the other" path back. This, actually, brought >>>
Fana-cycling with Fanasåta
- Date:
- 28.05.2017
- Characteristic:
- Bike trip - mixed
- Duration:
- 5:00h
- Distance:
- 72.7km
I took my bike southwards from Varden, Fyllingsdalen, first passing by Søreide into the direction of Hjellestad. After having crossed the street to the airport, I turned sharply left at Blomsterdalen, continuing on the small road #172 towards Fana. At Skeie, I made sure to connect to the even smaller road, which passes by Hordnesskogen. At Stend, I connected with the main road to Fana, #546, coming there from Rådalen. I then cycled by Fana and continued on road #163 up to Fanafjellet. Even though the height difference is not much, this ascent clearly is tougher than cycling on level ground. :-)
At Fanafjellet, I parked my bike in order to make a short detour to Fanasåta. Right before (north of) the big parking place on the saddle on Fanafjellet, a little forest road leaves to the northeast, >>>
Møsnuken from Tveit
- Date:
- 18.03.2017
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:15h
- Distance:
- 5.5km
Via Fana, we first drove to Osøyro, before we continued along road 137 (in northeastern direction). We passed Heggland and continued to Tveit, where we parked the car near to the point, where the street passes over Spannsteigselva, coming down from Gjemdalsskaret (at the end of our hike, we should come down exactly there, too).
Our plan was to ascend towards Møsnuken via Tveitaberget. To do so, we first found a little forest road, which departs from Hegglandsdalsvegen a little southwest of where we parked (i.e., back along the street, which we had come there). This forest road leads upwards (mostly in western direction) and brings one conveniently to a height of about 150mosl. There, after an extended left swing, the road splits into a somewhat more prominent part, leading upwards in northern >>>
Around Gåssandvatnet
- Date:
- 28.12.2016
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 3:00h
- Distance:
- 10.1km
After first visiting a shop in Søfteland (along E39 from Bergen to Os), we wanted to make a hike around Gåssandvatnet. We parked our car right next to the Søfteland school and started to walk from there. First, we followed a little path, which leads southwards (parallel to E39, but not right at it, fortunately).
Our plan was to cross Storestraumen across a little bridge, which we had seen before on the map. Once we got there, however, we met an unexpected challenge: The bridge belongs to the private place on the other side of Storestraumen and it is locked with a door that is also secured by an alarm. Since we were motivated to not give up at once, we organized the telephone number of the owner of the bridge from a friendly neighbor and then called. Luckily we were then enabled to cross >>>
Bjørnaåsen
- Date:
- 04.12.2016
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 0:30h
- Distance:
- 1.5km
I followed E39 southwards, passing by Os, and heading into the direction of Halhjem, where the ferry leaves towards Vågen on Stord. Right before the ferry port, I turned left (in eastern direction), following Bjørnavegen. I then turned right (in southern direction), continuing on Halhjemsmarka, passing by a little soccer field near Halhjem school. I followed the road until point N60.1402, E5.4393, where I parked. I went a few meters in eastern direction to step out of the houses and into the forrest, which covers all of Sørneset. There, it was basically just following a gradient-search path towards the (small) top of Bjørnaåsen. I crossed over the top until I got at least a limited view towards the south and out onto the sea (through the trees, though), before I returned. I stepped >>>
