Svartaberget in nice winter sun

Date:
14.01.2017
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
3:00h
Distance:
9.0km

We started in Varden and used Bregnestien to get close to Gjeddevatnet as soon as possible. Once had descended to Gjeddevatnet (basically to the place, where occasionally some bath in warmer months), we continued along the water (in northward direction). We kept going along the water, passing by Skogadotten and Skaget until we reached Gjerdsvika. Before going further to Bjørndalsvatnet (over the heights southwest of Hesjaholtet), we first made a short visit to Fureneset (very nice in the winter sun!). We then crossed over the heights west of Hesjaholtet in order to connect to Bjørndalsvatnet. We came back down to the water basically directly west of the northern most block of Hesjaholtet and managed to continue along the water (even though there is a very steep cliff to its eastern side). >>>

Gullaksdalen from Loddefjord

Date:
07.01.2017
Characteristic:
Hike
Duration:
2:00h
Distance:
7.7km

We parked in Frieda Fasmers vei, near Loddefjord, and started in parallel to the highway, rounding Storavatnet on its northern side. Where road 555 enters Harafjelltunnelen, we followed a major gravel road that turns southwards and leads to a place called Slettebakksmyra. There, at two points, other gravel roads depart from the one we took (at the first junction, we continued straight ahead and at the second, we turned left and upwards, following a sign to Gullaksdalen). We then continued on the gravel road until it ends. There, one can read about the history of Gullaksdalen. We then continued a few meters further, reaching a nice place with great view of Småvatnet. Only meters from there, we could see some of the historic ruins, which were described on the information board at the end >>>

Løvstakken via Nova

Date:
01.01.2017
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:15h
Distance:
3.3km

We parked the car at the parking place right above Litlavatnet (along Krohnegården street in upper Fyllingsdalen) and had the plan to try out a new route up Løvstakken. And so we did! :-) We started along the usual path, which leads firmly upwards (in northeastern direction towards the saddle between Ravnefellet and Løvstakken). After having past the little waterfall on our right, we found the right spot, where a less used path leaves to the right. We followed this minor path, which makes a comparably large half-circle around the waterfall (and above it), turning into a southward direction. Right above the waterfall, one needs to expect wet terrain; so good shoes are helpful, when choosing this alternative. From there, we then continued to ascend (following the kind of diagonally oriented >>>

Ljosvollsvarden

Date:
27.12.2016
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:00h
Distance:
3.5km

We left home in slight rain and no indication that the weather should clear up any time soon, driving via Midtun to the street, which leads up to Totland (road #183). We passed by Myrdalsvatnet and continued further upwards. Before we came to Fjellbirkeland, we parked right next to the road (at about 5.401°E/60.305°N). From there, we took a forest road, which leads steadily upwards (in southwestern direction). Soon the light rain turned into light snowfall (a bit nicer, after all). Once we came up and the terrain became comparably flat, we left the forest road and entered the forest in order to find a connection to the "top" of Ljosvollsvarden. We started (in the thick forest!) in southwestern direction, before we reached the end of the forest. There, we turned right (now in >>>

Storm-beaten Lyderhorn interruptus

Date:
26.12.2016
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:00h
Distance:
2.3km

We parked near Kjøkkelvik school on the western side of Lyderhorn and started to go from there (along Lyderhornslien). Once in Olderdalen, we started to ascend along the well-used path (upwards in southeastern direction). Near Små-Lyderhorn, at about 275mosl, we started to feel the strong winds, which also were announced all along the southwestern coast of Norway. Only minutes later, we concluded that the winds were too strong for continuing further up along the outer (southern) side of Lyderhorn. Instead, we decided to turn around, descend into Olderdalen (instead of taking the same path back, which we had taken up), and make an attempt to connect to this other path between Lyderhornslien and Lyderhorn (a bit further north). In principle, everything went as intended, but it must be noted >>>

Løvstakken

Date:
23.12.2016
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:15h
Distance:
3.5km

We parked at the small parking place right above Litlavanet (along road Krohnegården). We then stepped upwards in northeastern direction (towards Ravnefjellet) and came to the small saddle between Ravnefjellet and Løvstakken soon. From there, we turned "back" towards Løvstakken (mostly in southern direction, then). Soon later, we came to the top of Løvstakken. We returned basically along the same route. Almost all the way back, a little excursion (to the upper parts of the little waterfall down there "in the western corner of Løvstakken") was added---mostly to get an idea, whether one could ascend to Løvstakken also from there "diritissima" (it seems so---to be explored!). See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway . Web page WestCoastPeaks.com provides useful information about Løvstakken .

Knappen in December

Date:
11.12.2016
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:00h
Distance:
4.6km

We started at Varden, walking down Marineveien and further on Bjørgeveien, where we turned left into Sandeidbrotet shortly after, leading steeply upwards (towards Knappatjørna). At "the top", where the street makes a sharp turn to the left, a hiking path leaves to the right (only a few meters above another side-road, which only connects to a private place instead). Following the hiking path (into northwestern direction) brings one nearby Røstafjellet, i.e., another residential area (north of Knappen and slightly elevated above Bjørgeveien). Before actually entering this area, another hiking path leaves to the left and upwards, first in western direction, but then, following the ridge, turning more and more into southern direction. Once on the ridge, the path follows the heights >>>

Ulriken from Montana

Date:
26.11.2016
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:15h
Distance:
3.4km

We drove up to Montana and started to hike along Johan Blytts vei, crossing over a little stream and heading further upwards in southeastern direction until we met another forrest road that comes up from the south. We followed then this forrest road for a few steps (mostly in northeastern direction) until the next turn of this road (back into southern direction). At this turn, a whole section of new stone stairs have been built recently, leading upwards in northern direction and towards Ulriken. It was these new stone stairs, which we were eager to see for the first time, of course! :-) We stepped up and reached the top of Ulriken not long after (a little over half an hour, alltogether, from the parking place). Instead of taking the same route down, again, we instead followed the higher >>>

Løvstakken (steep way up)

Date:
19.11.2016
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:10h
Distance:
4.0km

We parked at the upper end of Kirsten Flagstads vei and walked from there (in light rain that soon would change into web snow). We walked up Rosenlundveien until we reached a major turn near house #43. Right after the turn, a small path leaves to the left and upwards. First, one steps a few meters up through the forrest, before then continuing underneath a power or telephone line that leads straight up, almost directly towards the summit of Løvstakken. Somehwere near the tree line, the path then turns a bit left (then in northern direction), where it continues steeply upwards over some rumble. Some meters higher up, one gets (if the weather is nice!) a great view over Fyllingsdalen. From there, it is then less steeply up towards the not far high-point of Løvstakken. From Løstakken, >>>

Gravdalsfjellet via Eikelifjellet

Date:
06.11.2016
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:45h
Distance:
5.0km

We started from the parking spot at the very end of Spelhaugen in Fyllingsdalen and ascended towards Eikelifjellet at once (we did not start along the major gravel road, which leads up to Tennebekktjørnet, but in parallel to this road, right a little bit to its north). Once over the top of Eikelifjellet, we continued in northern direction and towards Nipetjørna. We crossed over near the southeastern end of Nipetjørna and then continued towards the renewed Viggohytten. From there, it is only a few meters further up to the top of Gravdalsfjellet (not so clear, after all, where the actual top of Gravdalsfjellet is, really). We then decided to take another path down. Even though the terrain is steep, it is well possible to follow a minor path down from Gravdalsfjellet across its western >>>
