Erstadfjellet and Hånipa
- Date:
- 09.04.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 4:15h
- Distance:
- 11.7km
Trying to find a good spot for social distancing in this "special year" 2020, we aimed at the very west of Osterøy. The one little height, which we still had on our wish-list, Hånipa, with its apparently very steep western side, attracted us (for a longer time already) with a promise of nice views down to Sørfjorden. To make this a nice round, we parked near Askeland, about 200 height-meters above Votlo. From there, we first walked into Askelandsdalen (in eastern direction), before ascending relatively steeply to Setleitet (with some nice views down to Askelandsvatnet on the other side). Turning left, we started our ascent to Erstadfjellet (via Merkjedalsstølen). Crossing over Erstadfjellet, and only spending a few minutes up there to enjoy some nice views across Sørfjorden >>>
Veten and Varden on Eldsfjellet
- Date:
- 10.11.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 3:00h
- Distance:
- 8.1km
Starting from Bergen, we drove northwards, first, crossing over Nordhordlandsbrua on road E39. On the other side, instead of further following the main road, we turned left and onto road 564 that extends in northwestern direction on the southwestern side of Holsnøy. Eldsfjellet is found quite far in the northwest of Holsnøy and we aimed at parking near Skurtveit, only a bit after coming through Vikebø at Rosslandspollen. Close to Svehaugane, just a few meters up from the sea at Rosslandsvegen, we found a parking opportunity near a place, where apparently the bus also turns around. From there, we started our hike along Skurtveitvegen, first. We followed some minor roads to a point right in the south of Storatjørna from where a trail is starting in northern direction. Passing by Storatjørna >>>
Brøknipa from Skaftå
- Date:
- 21.09.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 6:15h
- Distance:
- 15.7km
We took the car from Bergen to Osterøy (first along E16, then across the bridge). Right after crossing the bridge, we turned right (into the direction of Bruvik). Following Bruvikvegen, we soon after arrived at Skaftå, where we parked next to the road. We then walked a few meters in order to get started with our hike up to Brøknipa. When checking the information board at the beginning of the hike (right next to Bruvikvegen), we detected a dotted line that suggested that one could hike up directly to Utegardsnipa (instead of first going along Skaftådalen to Stølane before then turning back and up to the ridge that leads to Utegardsnipa). We thus adapted our plans to try out this route. We started "the usual way" (towards Skaftådalen), but at about 100mosl we found a little >>>
Brøknipa from Båtaleitet parking
- Date:
- 19.07.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:00h
- Distance:
- 5.3km
We started from Båtaleitet parking, quite a bit above Bruvik on Osterøy (to the right, right after crossing the bridge). Following the easy-to-find trail, we soon arrived at the top of Brøknipa (Bruviknipa), enjoying some very nice views over Sørfjorden from up there (it's always wonderful to stand on top of Brøknipa -- very much recommended!). After spending a bit of time on the top, we then returned back down on the same trail that we had taken up. A nice (not too long) hike with great views! :-)

Grånipa and Gløvreegga from Vaksdal
- Date:
- 19.05.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 5:30h
- Distance:
- 14.4km
We took the car from Bergen and along E16 into the direction of Voss. At Vaksdal, we left the main road and parked only a few meters away near Vaksdal Senter. From there, we first followed the road a little further down until we crossed over the bridge to the northern part of Vaksdal. There, we followed the roads up to Flordalen. Near the house with address Flordalen 64, a sign marks the start of the trail up to Javnastølen. This trail is well visible all the way up and nice to follow (steep though). Near Lyhornet, one reaches the tree line and nice views over Sørfjorden open up (you need to turn around!). Above Lyhornet, we then followed the high ridge further towards Javnasåta (in northeastern direction). Particularly on this ridge, the views are really very nice! :-) From Javnasåta, >>>
Vedafjellet and Brøknipa from Skaftå
- Date:
- 12.05.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 5:15h
- Distance:
- 16.0km
We left Bergen via Arna, continuing along road E16 in the direction of Voss, before then taking the bridge to Osterøy. On the other side, we turned right onto the narrow road towards Bruvik and followed it (on the northern side of Sørfjorden) for quite a bit. After getting around Stokkaneset and before driving into Skaftå, we parked near the sharp right-turn, which is built over the stream that comes down from Djupedalen. Right there, we forest road leaves to the north (and upwards), following Djupedalen for a short stretch (before turning left and upwards). We continued to walk up this forest road until it eventually swings to the left for good (at about 135mosl). There, we found the trail head, as planned. After a few meters of leading further northwards, the trail crosses a little >>>
Knutstignova (return via Harafjellet)
- Date:
- 14.04.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 6:00h
- Distance:
- 12.2km
We took the E16 in the direction towards Voss from Bergen and left it (to the left / north) at Dalseid, right after Dale. We then followed the (very narrow!) road along Bolstadfjorden (Kastevika) towards the north until we came to the place where the lower ends of Dalseidmarkåna meet the road. There we parked, expecting that we would come back down here later, and started our hike first with a little more on the road (just around Tretteneset). We continued on the road over the bridge (water that comes down from Straumsmarkåna) and then turned left onto a nice forest road (it does not seem as if anything motorized used that road for a while though). This road/trail lead steeply up through the forest and into the direction of Botnastølen. At about 200mosl, we seemingly lost the trail, >>>
Husdalsfjellet via Husdalen from Kanalen
- Date:
- 13.04.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 5:00h
- Distance:
- 13.3km
We took the E39 to the north of Bergen, crossing over to Knarvik over Nordhordlandsbrua. We then continued along E39 (in the direction of Førde) along the northern side of Osterfjorden. Right after Bjørsviktunnelen, we turned right at the second opportunity (marked towards Molvik there). Note that this exit comes almost immediately after the one to Bjørsviki, so it's good to keep your eyes open right after leaving the tunnel! :-) We then followed Molvikavegen for only a very short stretch until we crossed over the little bridge over Kanalen. Right after the bridge, we found a little place on the left, where we could park for a while. Just meters above the parking, a private road to Husdalen leaves to the northeast (left), locked behind a bar. We hiked along this road then, in the >>>
Iseggene, Storefjellet, and Fårikken
- Date:
- 24.02.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 4:00h
- Distance:
- 14.6km
We took the car to Valestrand on Osterøy and parked near a playing ground not far from where the ferry arrives/leaves. In order to get up to Eidefjellet, we traversed a "labyrinth" of small roads up the northwestern side of Valestrand. Soon we arrived near the top-most house and found the trail head right next to it. From there, the continuation was nice and easy to find, following the ridge up in northwestern direction. After crossing Kjeringfjellet, we continued along the ridge (in northwestern direction). Before the trail swings to the right, in order to connect with Iseggene, we left the main path for a short excursion to Brattfjellet. Without finding any path there, we quickly ended up in quite a bit of vegetation, requiring a bit of explorer spirit to continue. After >>>
Sæterfjellet on a wonderful winter day
- Date:
- 28.10.2018
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 7:00h
- Distance:
- 14.7km
We drove from Bergen northwards on E39, continuing further in the direction of Førde after Knarvik. Right before entering Eikefettunnelen, we left E39 and continued on road 570 in northern direction. After coming by Dyrdalen, we soon reached Kjekallevågen and bridge over it. Right afterwards, on Borgaholmane, we parked and started our hike.
To start, we first crossed the bridge again (now per pedes and in southern direction) and headed towards Langeneset. At exactly the point, where the bridge ends, we left the road and started our ascent to Såta, stepping up a long ridge (south of Rasmusdalen), leading up to Gamlesetra, etc. The first check-point along this route is a point at about 115mosl, where the power line, which comes southwards across Kjekallevågen, makes a turn so that it >>>
