Fløyen from Bergen harbor
- Date:
- 19.04.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 1:00h
- Distance:
- 3.0km
With guests, just arrived from Austria, we exploited the nice weather and showed Bergen from above (from Fløyen). Up by feet, down by Fløybanen. :-) Not a big hike (and definitely not alone), but clearly a nice day and always nice to look down onto Bergen from the top station of Fløybanen! :-)

Short hike over Vardafjellet
- Date:
- 12.04.2019
- Characteristic:
- Walk
- Duration:
- 0:30h
- Distance:
- 1.4km
After a meeting at Solstrand, I was heading to another meeting in Bergen. Given the beautiful day and half an hour to spare, I decided to include a quick walk over one of the minor peaks near Osøyro: Vardafjellet. I drove up to Øvre Varåsen and found a place to park for half an hour. My plan was then to continue to Varåsgrenda and to take a trail from there (as I had seen it on the map). Walking north on Øvre Varåsen, however, I turned left one street too early. Soon, I understood that this would not lead to the trail, but since I thought that ascending to Vardafjellet should not be too difficult, even without a trail, I continued and indeed found a reasonable opportunity at the back of house 48 (southwest of it). Within a few minutes, I had connected to the trail and then followed >>>
Vossavardane via Innapåeggi and Utapåegga
- Date:
- 07.04.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:45h
- Distance:
- 9.1km
We parked near Nedre Romslo at Romslovegen (very near to the E16). Our goal was to reach the ridge of Innapåeggi and then to follow it upwards into the direction of Gullfjellet. At house 243, shortly before crossing over E16, we left Romslovegen and started to ascend towards the ridge. First, we used a path until we came close to the forest. From there on, it was mostly through the forest and towards the ridge. This part was steep and the underground was partly unstable. It is highly recommended to plan carefully and to not follow this track without having good shoes. Also, it was useful to use our hands every now and then, before reaching the ridge. Clearly, this first part of our hike required a portion of hiking experience! Once on the ridge, however, the hike turned into a wonderful >>>
Livarden
- Date:
- 06.04.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:30h
- Distance:
- 9.3km
We started from the small parking place at Øvre Totland and headed right towards the long ridge of Totlandsfjellet. Enjoying lovely spring weather, we ascended swiftly towards the top of Totlandsfjellet. The next goal was then to cross over to Livarden. When getting over from Totlandsfjellet to Livarden near Seterhaugen, we were positively surprised that the terrain was not overly wet (even though we still saw a little bit of snow there). From Karvestølen it was then only a few minutes to ascent to Livarden via Nordvardsbrekkene. At Livarden, we enjoyed a short break, before heading back. Instead of hiking back the same path, however, we followed the ridge towards Ulvursfjellet (the main path up and down Livarden). Instead of staying on the higher ridge (with the main path), we followed >>>
Via Storaskjenet to Sangoltshornet
- Date:
- 17.03.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 4:15h
- Distance:
- 12.7km
I took the car to Sotra and there to Sund kommune (on road 555 first). Near Hammarsland, I turned left (towards Klokkarvik), following road 198 for a bit. Near the northern-most point of Dommedalsvatnet, I parked and started my hike from there. I first headed towards Ormadalen and up through it (mostly without any trail). A little higher up there, I then connected to the main path towards Storaskjenet. Shortly later, I found myself on Storaskjenet: a substantial cliff (towards the west). After enjoying the views from there (and taking some photos), I continued in southern direction along the ridge. The path, which the map shows, is not easy to find and I ended up improvising most of the "way" along this ridge (no problem). Near Tveitahøgda, I reconnected to the path, which >>>
Pre-flight Knappen
- Date:
- 16.03.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 0:45h
- Distance:
- 4.5km
Before one of us had to leave the country, the prospect of sitting some hours on planes was enough to bring us out for a short hike (even though the weather was not the best). Since time was short, the decision was easy: one quick walk over Knappen! :-) Refreshing!

Brotavarden from Kallestad
- Date:
- 10.03.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 2:45h
- Distance:
- 7.7km
I took the car to Sotra and there to Kallestad, leaving the road 555 at Trengereid. Right next to Sjoartjørna, I found the sharp turn to the left (and up to Kallestad), even though there wasn't really a street sign to see. I then parked next to Kallestad Grendahus and started my hike from there (first still on the road in western direction and between some houses). Soon, I left Kallestad behind and began my hike through wild Sotra. :-) When crossing over a meadow (south of Stølstjørna, still very near to Kallestad), I failed to see, where the trail continued (a bit further north of where I went). So, instead of hiking along the trail, I ended up on Skjenhaugen, enjoying the view from up there! I then continued (parallel to the trail) further in western direction (towards Kjereidet). >>>
Around Tyssøy on a windy day
- Date:
- 23.02.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 2:00h
- Distance:
- 5.4km
We took the car to Tyssøy (via Mathopen, then through the tunnel under Vatlestraumen, and then across Bjorøyna) and parked at Støene, where also the bus turns around. Our plan was to walk around the island and thus we left the "main road" already in the first turn (towards the southeast). We came by quite a number of goats before visiting Storeklubben first. From there, we first went a few steps back in order to reconnect with the main trail that leads southwards along the shore of Tyssøy (but a bit higher up in the terrain). We followed the well-marked path southwards until we came near to Slettevikklubben. There, instead of further following the trail, which leads "back" towards the central trail across the island, we improvised towards Børvika. This wasn't >>>
Sjurstonipa
- Date:
- 17.02.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 2:00h
- Distance:
- 6.1km
We took the car from Bergen via Åsane to Gaupås and parked right at Arna stadion. Our first goal was to visit Osen (via Gamsevegen) and to check whether one indeed has a nice view from up there -- and, yes, the view, for example across Gaupåsvatnet, is quite nice! :-) From there, we wanted to connect to Sjurstonipa. But instead of taking the nice path back, which we used to get up to Osen, we descended along a stone wall that runs towards the east from Osen. At the lower end of this descent (near Kvernaskaret), the terrain is quite a bit steep and choosing ones steps carefully was advised (no problem, though, to get down to the saddle). On the other side, we then ascended to the Lavvo place near the upper houses of Ytre Arna. Instead of entering Ytre Arna, we continued across the "top", >>>
Førdesveten from Stranda
- Date:
- 03.02.2019
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 2:45h
- Distance:
- 7.1km
We took road 555 towards Sotra and then further south to Sund. At the Stranda school we parked, starting our hike from there. We first followed a well-visible path over Lamhusfjellet in order to get into Kleppadalen. Also there, the path was easy to follow and we continued along it into the direction of Førdesveten. From Kleppadalen, we then ascended in northeastern direction towards a saddle, where another path comes down from Ramnaberget in the southeast. Instead of immediately continuing towards Førdesveten, we decided to quickly ascend Storevarden (in the northwest of the saddle). There were no steps to see in the snow, but proceeding to the top was nonetheless quite OK. At Storevarden, one can appreciate an impressive stone wall that probably was built to confine sheep towards >>>
