Nygårdsnipa and Gravdalsfjellet from Laksevåg
- Date:
- 05.12.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 2:00h
- Distance:
- 4.0km
It was time for some new exploration in the city mountains of Bergen! :-) So we chose to ascend to Nygårdsnipa (and Gravdalsfjellet) from Laksevåg. We thus drove around and parked very near to where Damsgårdstunnelen ends on the western side (at Eliasmarken). Within a few steps, we started walking up (the quite steep) Nygårdslien. At the very upper end of Nygårdslien, one can conventiently enter the forest by stepping a little bit to the left at about 70mosl. But instead of following the trail, that extends from there up to the saddle between Holefjellet and Gravdalsfjellet, we crossed over (in southwestern direction) right above the highest houses at Nygårdslien. This first brought us to a little ridge (high above Lyngbøveien). From there, we first followed this ridge upwards >>>
Lyderhorn
- Date:
- 28.11.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 1:30h
- Distance:
- 3.6km
Aiming at using a relatively short morning period for which no rain was predicted, we decided to "just" ascent to Lyderhorn (when needing a good idea for a nice, near hike, Lyderhorn is a natural solution!). One question requiring a bit of extra-thinking, though, regards the choice of the route up (and down). While already driving towards Loddefjord, we discussed several options and landed on a new ascent from the southeast, i.e., where the highways join south of Liavatnet. We parked right next to Lyderhornsveien, north of Bjørndalstjørna, and walked the few meters to the place, where the highway 555 disappears into Lyderhorntunnelen right underneath. While leaving the road where a simple trail comes down from a saddle in the west, we did not follow this trail upwards, but decided >>>
Livarden via Nordvardsrinden
- Date:
- 15.11.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 4:00h
- Distance:
- 5.8km
Lucky we have friends, who agreed to embark with us on a little adventure: ascending to Livarden from Unnelandsvegen! To prepare, we had carefully studied the map and, in particular, the area between Kalvehalsen and Nordvardsrinden. A search for related trip reports of others did not result in anything. Understanding that the terrain is very steep on the north-side of Livarden, we paid extra attention to where we possibly could do it. Eventually, we decided to first approach Stallafossen (to have a look at it), then traverse to a little cabin at about 250mosl, west of Stallafossen, before then ascending along Nordvardsrinden up to Livarden. We parked along Unnelandsvegen, where the trail over Lavrinden comes down (where Klubbaelva spings into Nygardvika), and walked along Unnelandsvegen >>>
Eikhaugen
- Date:
- 07.11.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:30h
- Distance:
- 7.5km
A quite wet day invited to engage with some local exploration. After some short planning, Eikhaugen was identified as the overall goal, this afternoon. Starting from Varden, we headed north, first. At Askeladdveien, we decided to ascend relatively steeply to some minor heights west of Peer Gyntsvei. Crossing over this ridge south--north, we connected to the east-facing hillside in the west of Spelhaugen. At the northern end of Spelhaugen, where the Kindergarden and the parking place for Tennebekk-hikers is, we crossed over to the other, northeastern side of Spelhaugen, ascending relatively steeply up to the (also minor) heights north of Barliveien (Lurane). Rounding the southern end of Eikelifjellet on its southeastern side (northwest of Løvås), we entered a nice valley with a little >>>
Livarden and Slettegga from Bontveit
- Date:
- 31.10.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 3:30h
- Distance:
- 10.8km
Expecting a couple of nice hours on this Saturday, we planned for a hike that was still on our "to-do list". Specifically, the idea was to combine an ascent to Livarden with one to Slettegga, connecting both via the saddle at Rambjørgvatnet. To do so, and to make this a nice round, we aimed at starting from Bontveit, ascending Livarden from there first (mostly without any trail), visiting Krokvatnet on our way, and then hike over to Slettegga. From there, our plan was to then return to Bontveit via Nobbane. And so we did it. :-)
Leaving Bergen southwards along E39, we turned left at Kalandsvatnet to drive road 5162 all the way up to Bontveit. At the highest point of this road (about 300mosl), before it starts winding down to Hausdalen in the south, we parked along with quite >>>
Gullfjelltoppen via Gulltjørna and Storegga
- Date:
- 18.10.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 6:00h
- Distance:
- 13.8km
We looked forward to a cold but sunny autumn Sunday and thus planned a hike "with high expectations"! :-) While we had earlier hiked quite a bit "here and there" in the Gullfjellet area, we not yet had traversed Storegga (in the north of Gullfjelltoppen). Thus we had a plan! :-) To make this hike a nice round, we aimed to start at the saddle between Trengereiddalen and Gullbotn, then traverse (without a trail) to Gulltjørna, before then ascending Gråfjellet and from there Storegga. After that, our plan was to hike down the major trail between Gullfjelltoppen and Gullbotn.
We left Bergen to the East, following E16 from Arna until the roundabout near Trengereid, where we turned right (in southern direction). We then drove up Trengereiddalen until we came to the saddle >>>
Short double-round in Milde
- Date:
- 17.10.2020
- Characteristic:
- Walk
- Duration:
- 1:30h
- Distance:
- 4.7km
The weather forecast was not too good and also there were other things to do, so the decision was to do something near and quick. We drove south through Ytrebygda, crossing Flyplassvegen to continue further south, towards Milde, following road #573. Coming closer, one follows the signs to Arboretet i Milde. We parked near a Kindergarden along Mildevegen and started our walk in northeastern direction. Once in the green, we turned right and towards Nepegjerdhaugen, which is the highest "top" on the island. Then, we turned back into the forest and headed towards Arboretet. We then walked southwards along a nice trail on the western side of Arboretet. At Naustdalen, we turned right (and towards the school there). With a bit of left and right, we then ended up on Lysthushaugen >>>
Rundehaugen from Fjæreide
- Date:
- 27.09.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 4:30h
- Distance:
- 9.7km
Since we expected the afternoon to be substantially cloudy, we decided to make a hike in the lowlands rather than up on some tops (and in the clouds). Since we had not yet explored this region in detail, we chose to start at Fjæreide (in the west of Knappskog on Sotra) and then aim for Rundehaugen (in the east of Skålvik). After driving along road 555 westwards to Sotra and then northwards (road 561), one comes to Knappskog. There, one can turn left (westwards, again) and follow a narrow road to Fjæreide, where there's ample space for parking next to the road (they may have had, or still have, plans to broaden this road, leaving quite a bit of not yet used space besides the road). At the southern-most point (in Fjæreide) the road crosses over a small valley in a large turn to the right. >>>
Krånipa, Raudnipa, and Hananipa (from Gullbotn)
- Date:
- 19.09.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 7:30h
- Distance:
- 17.7km
After a quite rainy period, we looked forward to a weekend with some nice weather. After weighing several hiking ideas against each other, we settled on a slightly longer hike over three Nipa-mountains in the East of Gullbotn. Driving along E16 from Arna, we turned right and up towards Gullbotn near Trengereid. Once above the saddle, we left the road at Gullbotn and parked right there (quite a number of parking places there). According to our plan (Krånipa first), we first headed in northern direction to get around Øyjordsvatnet. Almost exactly where Teinelva enters Øyjordsvatnet, we used a convenient bridge for pedestrians to get over to the other, eastern side. There, we turned left, again, to head for a small valley that runs south-north in the west of Skåpet. While passing by >>>
Kongsfjellet via Kongskleivo
- Date:
- 23.07.2020
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 1:30h
- Distance:
- 3.8km
Before returning from Austevoll, we decided to include Kongsfjellet near Bekkjarvik. Passing by Bekkarvik church, we headed toward the starting point of Kongskleivo, i.e., the newly layed stone path up to Kongsfjellet. After first rounding Taushaugen in its east and south, we started with stepping up the big stone steps, ascending to the "top" of Taushaugen before continuing to Kongsfjellet. At Kongsfjellet, we enjoyed some nice views in all directions (mostly across Bekkjarvik and southwards). We then walked a bit across the ridge of Kongsfjellet before hurrying down the stone steps, again, in order to secure a relaxed drive back to the ferry in Hufthammar. All in all, Kongskleivo is, yes, impressive due to the big stones, while then, also, kind of boring. The views from Kongsfjellet, >>>
