Valanipa and Sopandefjellet
Endre picked me up at my place shortly after seven and together we drove the around 2.5 hours to Vikafjellet. The drive however took slightly longer than usual given that the ventilation system in Endre's car did not work properly and we therefore had to make the occasional stop to manually remove excess moisture from the inside of the windshield. To make things worse, starting from Evanger the man-made fog inside the car was matched by an increasingly dense natural fog outside. Together with snow-covered roads this was not the best combination, but by taking it slow we managed to get to the parking lot at Fosse without any real issues.
As if planned, the fog magically disappeared just minutes before we arrived at the parking lot and we could see the first pinkish rays of sunlight hitting the surrounding mountain tops. It was still quite cold when we got out of the car and completed the final preparations but as we began our journey towards Valanipa we quickly warmed up. We passed south of Ovrisvatnet before turning north and following the ridge towards the summit with the sun rising above Klantane halfway up the ascent, which made the great views even better.
After a short break we descended the same way after having decided to skip our initial plan of heading south to Klantane and Fossfjellet. Instead we followed the snow-covered gravel road northwest, crossed the main road, and began ascending towards Sopandefjellet. This was straightforward and after a short lunch break we completed the rest of the ascent and reached the summit without any challenges. Once again there were excellent views from the summit. This time we could even see Sognefjorden and Vangsnes in the distance.
From the summit we turned south and followed the ridge down to Målsethytta. This was quite nice but we could have done with a bit more snow in order to fully enjoy the descent and reduce the fear of hitting the occasional exposed rock. All that remained was then the return to the parking lot along the snow-covered gravel road, thus completing a very nice roundtrip that can be highly recommended.
Throughout the trip we had been discussing how much ice we could expect to find on the inside of the car windows and planning how to go about removing it without a working ventilation system. It was however not as bad as we had feared and did not take too much work before we had enough visibility to safely begin our drive back to Bergen. And with the same manual work as in the morning we managed to keep it that way all the way home. We however both concluded that this would be our first and last winter trip in a car without a working ventilation system.
