Tricky times on Helgelands-bukken

Datum:

Took the Engabreen ferry and wlked broad track (wished for bikes) to glacier slabs. Marked trail and ropes/chains on rock slabs. Steep marked beaten trail up to ridges below hut. Large snow patches. Went into mist and needed careful navigation. In decreasing visibility, we had long snowy sections and uphill rocky sections. There were hardly any waymarks. We put on stiff boots and crampons and passed a red (waymark) spot. Our phone map was good and I took a rough compass bearing, but could not find more marks. This was getting quite serious. We had to get through to the hut, could not go back (no ferry) and did not know our exact location. We had no foreknowledge of the ground, and there was no trail or footprints. We made a short retreat and repeated one section, and returned to our high point. >>>

The red paint-marked path took us up slabs over a rocky crest with pools in crevasses and then up steeper rocks provided with a chain. I found the chain got in the way up and down and effectively made it harder to climb. A much less steep section lead to the summit. There is a little communication mast here. We wondered how essential it was on this small island. The mast and its electricity pylons were a bit of an eyesore, to be honest. We drank in the view for a while. A Hurtigbåt passed, weaving through the islands. As we moved off a swallowtail butterfly was being mobbed by red admiral butterflies. Neither of us had seen swallowtail before. We climbed down beside the dratted chain to the trail round the West side of the mountain. Then we climbed the excellent trail construction to the cave >>>

A quieter way to Besseggen

Datum:
31.05.2025

From Bessheim to Bessvatnet, where we crossed a shoogly bridge over the torrent. The north side of Veslfjellet had big snow fields leading up the gentle slopes to the summit ridge. The path was cairned and marked and the snow firm and rough, perfect for walking. We could see lots of people on the main path up from Gjendesheim on the skyline long before we joined that route, making us feel glad that we had chosen our starting point. We were at the enormous cairn on the 1743m summit at 12:45. We sat iin the sunshine, avoiding the cold breeze. I wanted to see Besseggen. The original plan had been to descend it and walk round the shore of Bessevatn, but big snow slopes on Besshoe looked potentially dangerous; I wasn’t going to risk it. Bessvatn was still frozen, so the renowned contrast between >>>

Muen - first of the new season's Norwegian mountians

Datum:
29.05.2025

From fv27 (road) high point (1053m) by broad path to summit (1427m) Muen is a plain lump of a mountain. The path is signposted and waymarked. There were in fact several broad paths all with the same purpose across the low shrub heath. The paths joined into one crossing a stony area, visible from a distance, and a smaller one which avoided it. It was lovely to be back among mountain plants again: juniper scrub, dwarf birch and willow. Trailing azalea just coming into flower. Later we watched bluethroat at the car park and kestrel on the hill. The second half of the climb was up a green boulderfield. The colour was caused by map lichen. There were a few people ahead. Muen only took 1¼ hours to climb. We had lunch in the shelter of one of the many cairns and shelters on the top. The views were very >>>
