Visiting Die Wüste Mannersdorf

Datum:
03.04.2005
Tourcharakter:
Wanderung
Tourlänge:
4:00h
Entfernung:
4,4km

We took the car to the northwestern edge of Leithagebirge, between Mannersdorf and Hof am Leithaberge, where one find the entry point for the Wüste , a nice place to visit, in particular also with kids. We first walked into the area along the Arbach, finding the alley, which leads up to St. Anna in der Wüste, previously a monestary. After some good time there, we continued (again along the Arbach) to a point, from which we then ascended to Schlossberg with its impressive Ruine Scharfeneck on top. After exploring these ruins, we continued along the height in southern direction, before we turned right (back towards St. Anna). On the way back, we also came by the Joachim Eremitage. Eventually, we returned to the car, passing by St. Anna in der Wüste once again. This place, Die Wüste Mannersdorf , really is recommended >>>

Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
7:30h
Entfernung:
81,7km

The last, sixth day of this one-week bike-trip through the Alps in Südtirol should bring us over the impressive Penserjoch (at 2200mosl) and then, via Sterzing and the Brenner, to Innsbruck, where we had planned to conclude our trip. We first cycled the roughly 800 height-meters up to Penserjoch in a little less than two hours, enjoying our last pass over 2000mosl, before continuing further northwards. What followed, was a long and fast descent down to Sterzing (at about 930mosl), from where we headed further towards the Brenner (minor pass at about 1365mosl). This brought us also back to Austria. From there, we basically "just" did a long descent towards Innsbruck (about 40km), where we arrived at about 4pm in the afternoon. All in all, this six days long bike trip through >>>

Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
9:00h
Entfernung:
81,6km

Day 2 of this multi-day bike-trip through the Alps should bring us from Austria to Südtirol, Italy. To do so, we had the plan to cross the 2040m high Stallersattel, coming from Defereggen. About two hours after having started in Bruggen (at about 1315mosl), we arrived at Stallersattel and enjoyed the beautiful mountain landscape there with satisfaction. :-) What followed, was a fast and long descent into the Antholzer valley (southwest of Stallersattel and already in Südtirol, Italy). At about noon-time, we were down at about 1000mosl, again, and turned left into the Pustertal (basically towards the east!). After a relatively short stretch in this comparably busy valley, we turned right, again (into southern direction), entering the Pragser valley with the plan to cycle up to Plätzwiesen >>>

Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
3:15h
Entfernung:
37,2km

The plan of this multi-day bike trip was to explore the beautiful Alps in Südtirol by bike. To begin with this adventure, we first took the train from Wien to Lienz, starting there at about 4pm in the afternoon. We first followed the Isel-valley in northwestern direction until we arrived in Huben about 1 hour later. There, we left the relatively flat Isel-valley and turned left (then in western direction), entering Defereggen via a first steep ascent. Passing by Hopfgarten and St. Veit in Defereggen, we cycled to a place called Bruggen, where we stopped for the night. Having reached a height of already 1315mosl (after about 43km of cycling on this day) promised to be a good start into day 2, where we first planned to ascent further, up to Stallersattel at about 2000mosl. Biking across the Alps 2.4: Taxenbach-Salzburg

Datum:
15.08.1997
Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
9:00h
Entfernung:
97,3km

The fourth and last day of this multi-day bike trip across the Alps should bring us to Salzburg, where we had planned to take the train back to Wien. All in all, this was then more like a transport stretch at the end of this trip, even though we came by majestic mountain scenes also on this day (seen from the bottom of the valley, though). Following the Salzach, basically, we first headed eastwards, before turning more and more northwards, into the direction of Salzburg. After about 100km of cycling (and about 8 hours), we arrived in Salzburg, concluding this bike-trip across the Alps in a very satisfied mood! Biking across the Alps 2.3: Döllach-Taxenbach

Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
11:30h
Entfernung:
68,3km

The third day of this multi-day bike trip across the Alps should be our big day, cycling the Glockner Hochalpenstrasse up to about 2500mosl! We started from Döllach and decided to take the Apriacher Höhenstrasse (on the eastern side of the valley and quite high up as compared to the lowest points in the valley, even though this meant to cut short a stretch through Heiligenblut, almost a must-see on this trip. Cycling high above the deep Möll-valley, however, provided us with great views already early in the morning and we enjoyed it already then very much! :-) After about 12km of cycling (and about +500hm up), we connected back to the main street, there coming up from Heiligenblut lying further west and down in the valley. With this, we were on this magnificent mountain road, the Glockner >>>

Biking across the Alps 2.2: Hermagor-Döllach

Datum:
13.08.1997
Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
10:00h
Entfernung:
94,3km

The second day of this multi-day bike trip across the Alps brought us close to the big goal, the Glockner Hochalpenstrasse. First, however, we continued through the Gail-valley for about 40km until we came to Kötschach-Mauthen, where the valley stops to be wide and comparably flat. This was the point, where we wanted to cross over to the Drau-valley (in the north of the Gail-valley). Thus, we traversed the Gailbergsattel, i.e., the first major pass on this trip (almost 1000mosl). Once in the Drau-valley, we continued in western (northwestern) direction, getting closer to Lienz quickly. Before actually getting to Lienz, however, we made a turn to the north, leaving the Drau-valley again and crossing over the second major pass on this day, i.e., Iselsberg (about 1200mosl), to the Möll-valley. >>>

Biking across the Alps 2.1: Villach-Hermagor

Datum:
12.08.1997
Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
3:15h
Entfernung:
50,7km

The plan of this multi-day bike trip was to cross the Alps, once again, from the south to the north, passing over the Glockner Hochalpenstrasse, which brings travelers up to 2500mosl! To start, we took the train from Wien to Villach, where we got onto our bikes at about 4pm in the afternoon. As a consequence of the comparably late start into this day 1, we only made a relatively short stretch on this day (about 65km). Surrounding the Dobratsch near Villach in its east and south, we entered the Gail-valley, which we then cycled westwards into the direction of Hermagor. After a little more than 3 hours of cycling, and passing by Pressegger See close to the end, we arrived in Egg, not far from Hermagor, where we stopped for the night. Biking from Salzburg to Wien 3: Wachau-Wien

Datum:
16.08.1996
Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
6:00h
Entfernung:
107,8km

Since I had made it already to Wachau on the day before, the remaining stretch to Wien was quite doable on this day (altogether about 120km along the Donau-river). In total, from Wien to Salzburg and back, this summed up to more than 800km on the bike and about 37h of biking, excluding breaks, etc. More details about the entire bike-trip are available via a separate web page . Route details about four longer bike rides in/near the Alps are summarized on a separate web page . See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway .

Biking from Salzburg to Wien 2: Steinbach-Wachau

Datum:
15.08.1996
Tourcharakter:
Fahrradtour
Tourlänge:
10:15h
Entfernung:
203,6km

After two extra days at Attersee, I finally decided to leave the Salzkammergut and cycle to Vienna, making good distances where possible. Starting in Steinbach am Attersee at about 8am in the morning, I arrived in Weissenkirchen near Wels at about 11:20 (about 74km from Steinbach). Without much delay, I continued further and arrived near Linz at about 1pm (a bit above 100km from Steinbach). Eventually, I made it to Wachau, altogether, accumulating about 200km of cycling on this day (in a little above 10h). Clearly, I tested my limits with this attempt to get as close to Wien as possible. More details about the entire bike-trip are available via a separate web page . Route details about four longer bike rides in/near the Alps are summarized on a separate web page . See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway .
