We went for a long weekend trip to Hurrungane with Sigurd and Brede. The plan was to stay around Jotunheimen for four days and do some hiking and climbing. The weather was really bad, so there wasn't much climbing at the end... We arrived Wednesday late night and camped near Turtagrø.
Thursday 6th August. This was the first day after a short sleep in the tent since we arrived late the day before. We woke up in fog and didn't feel like doing anything technical, so I used my opportunity to go alone for a long run and did Fannaråken twice and then Nørdre Skagastølstinden. Some solid 3500 elevation meters in 41km in very forgettable weather. At least I got a good workout for whatever race event I was going to have in the future.
Friday 7th August. This was the day that was supposed to have the best weather during our stay so we planned to do the Austanbotntinden traverse. We woke up early and drove for about 20 minutes and hiked up towards Søre Austanbotntinden with some basic climbing gear. We soon realized that the weather was not going to be nice... since we still had many hours we decided to hike to the point where the climbing starts with the hope that the weather might clear up. No miracle occurred that day and we got to the start of the climb with about 10m length of sight... I decided I was not going to do the traverse: I only like climbing from time to time and if the conditions are perfect. We decided to head down and do something else. As usually happens, as we were going down it started to clear up. After talking about it, Sigurd and Brede decided to actually go back to the climbing point and do the traverse. I was conveinced that the weather was not going to improve and that the slightly improved weather that we observed was just a random fluctuation of a highly unstable phenomenon. So, I gave them my water, wished them luck and we planned to meet at Vestre Austanbotntinden in about 10 hours time. 15 hours later, I had taken a nap, had gone up and down Vestre Austanbotntinden twice and done some small part of the ridge from the other side alone. It was starting to get dark and had no wish to spend the night waiting for them so I started hiking the road back to Turtagrø where we had our tents. 13Km after a long day was quite boring, but I finally got to my tent a about 1:00 in the night. I eat some biscuits and went to my sleeping bag, hoping to see the others the morning after.
Saturday 8th August. I woke up and checked that Sigurd's and Brede's tents were inhabited by some creatures, so I assumed they survived the day before's traverse. I usually don't sleep too much in the tent, so I knew that it would be several hours for them for wake up. I had breakfast, read a bit (I always take my ebook on multiday trips that allow it), then went for a coffee to the hotel to find out a very nice collection of mountain books and guides which I spent some hours checking... Finally they woke up, we had some breakfast (second breakfast for me I guess) and decided to do some sport climbing since they were quite tired from the day before. I had been climbing very little during the last year, so I knew that sport climbing was a bit tiring for my climbing shape, but climbing in soaked wet rock is all about technique so it was fun anyways.
Sunday 9th August. This day we had to drive back to Trondheim. As usually happens, the weather was amazing. We decided to stop on the way back and hike up Skardstinden and Nåle in the first tur during this trip that was worth taking some photos.
