Arthur's Seat

Date:
31.01.2015
Characteristic:
Hike
Duration:
1:26h
Distance:
5.2km

Started from The Scottish Parliament, followed Volunteer's Walk eastward, via The Dry Dam to Piper's Walk, which led us to the top. Good foot path all the way, up until about 200 metres from the top, where a little bit of scrambling was required. Downhill we went straight down to Dunsapie Loch and followed Queen's Drive past St Margaret's Loch back to The Scottish Parliament. With me on tour: Ben.

Fitful Head & Ward of Scousbourgh

Date:
26.01.2015
Characteristic:
Hike
Duration:
3:36h
Distance:
18.7km

Took bus 6 to Troswick (just south of Levenwick) and went off the A970 on to a single track road leading westward to the top of Ward of Scousburgh. Hard wind and hail made me put on those ski goggles I brought with me but never thought I'd actually use. How glad I was to be able to shield my eyes from the falling ice! I continued on westwards down to Scousburgh and eastwards n B9122 through Skelberry back to A970. Walking south along the busy road to Dunrossness where I again turned westwards and walked to Hillwell. From here began the ascent of Fitful Head. Had a quick looking around at the top before jogging down to catch the last bus back to the A970 and on to Lerwick.

Ward of Bressay

Characteristic:
Hike
Duration:
3:15h
Distance:
16.8km

Walked up through wet grass to Ward of Bressay, with a beautiful view over the sound to Lerwick. Then followed the paved road down and walked on toward Hill of Setter. Down again and followed the car road to the foot of Ander Hill. My map suggested there might be a path to the top, but I found it first as I was descendind the top. And it was a very narrow path that dissapeared in places. The top of Ander Hill gave a very nice view of the isle of Noss. Unfortunately the ferries to Noss does not operate this time of year.
