Lofoten på sølvfat! The decision to try Higravtinden was taken on the boat from Skutvik to Svolvær. We were sceptical about how much snow would be in the top section, so packed crampons & ice axes. We parked by the side of what looks like a sammfunshus and headed up an old road to the right of the parking. We hopped over a gate and followed the path upwards. A great path for the most part, a few sections with loose stones but pleasantly dry & easy terrain.

After just over an hour, at around 680moh we had reached the snow couloir and stopped to put crampons on. The couloir was around 30 degrees here, but it was late afternoon and the snow was pretty slushy so heading up wasn't a problem. As the couloir narrowed out and got closer to 50 degrees, we walked with the ice axes until we reached the pass when the view just exploded in front of us. Here we took off our crampons and left them and continued along the right side of the ridge. There was quite a few sections on the back side of the summit that hadn't gotten any sun and the snow was ice hard.

We came up to the first top without problems, then after reading hmsv1 (Hannah Vickers)'s great report, we looked for a path sneaking down and around to the right. The final scramble starts from a ledge so its not too exposed, but definitely a challenge for those of us who are a bit shorter. A bit gut wrenching for us as it was still filled with ice, if we had of packed the crampons in I definitely would have used them here. We had a long lunch break at the top taking in the stunning views in all directions.

I don't have much experience on snow, and especially not in steeper alpine conditions, so i was a bit nervous about the trip down. We had our harnesses with us and decided to sling together with 2 x 120cm slings in case I fell and couldnt manage to dig my ice axe in. Great thinking, as i fell in the top of the steepest section of the coloir. Thankfully paal managed to stop me before i became bird food on a pile of rocks...the decent on the rest of the snow went pretty slowly. Soon enough we reached the path again and followed it back down to the car. An absolutely magical day out, an awesome hike and absolutely breathtaking views! Much better photos can be seen at uglefisk (Paal Andre Lund).
