Conditions today were quite challenging. The snow was frozen hard, sometimes like concrete. In the forest from time to time the ski tracks were covered with needles and branches from the trees. At some steep sections I had to carry the skis because it was too icy. But at least the weather made me smiling. Sun, blue sky and no wind! Perfect. A lot of uphill tracks with some nice and long downhill sections. There was not much grip for the skis so uphill was very strenuous most of the time. The last 6 km became rather thrilling with 350 vertical meters descending back to the starting point. After some rain and mild temperatures during the last days the prepared ski track had got frozen and was more suitable for a bobsled than for cross country skis. Another great cross contry ski tour in the Erzgebirge mountains. First 3 km took about one and a half hour. There was no prepared track so I had to make progress in deep snow with 300 vertical m uphill on a forest road. A lot of trees were broken from the heavy snow and blocked the track. At the border to Czech republic I could be happy to ski on well prepared tracks in a winter-wonderland. The tour continued at an elevation of about 1000 m where the snow was 1-2 meters deep. Eventually I reached Plattenberg / Blatenský vrch mountain where I had some lunch. For the next hours i could enjoy the ski tracks on top of the Erzgebirge mountains with some nice downhill sections, but most of the time going in relative flat terrain.
