Skiing: Mjølfjell to Skiple

After last weekend's successful skiing trip to Øykjafonn and Skipanuten I decided to have another go, but this time on my own and starting from Mjølfjell. I again took the early morning train from Bergen and arrived at Mjølfjell train station just before nine. From the station I followed the gravel road north into Rjonaddalen, where I carried the skis for the first 2 km, before putting them on a continuing beside the road where there was just enough snow left. I soon left the road for a shortcut to reconnect with the road up to Grodjuvet. This road normally continues all the way to the bridge across Grodjyvo , but today the road was soon hidden underneath the snow. By then it was too late to cross the partially open river and I instead continued north until I could safely cross via the mentioned bridge and start the ascent to Grodjuvenuten . After passing on the northern side of Skyttargluggane, all that remained >>>

Due to a late worsening of the weather forecast, I postponed my initial hiking plans in Fusa and instead opted for a more local hike. In the end, the rain did not begin until after I had arrived home anyway and I am pretty sure I could have completed most of the planned hike without getting too wet.

When petter (Petter Bjørstad) asked if I wanted to go hiking or skiing this weekend I of course said yes, and we settled on a skiing trip to Øykjafonn and Skipanuten . After taking an early train from Bergen we arrived at Upsete stasjon shortly after nine, and after finding a way to safely get to the other side of the train tracks we started the 750 vertical meters ascent to Øykjafonn. After crossing the river coming down from Gangsdalsvatnet via a snow bridge we pretty much followed the ridge south all the way to the summit. Still plenty of snow, although there were also times when we had to navigate around areas where the snow had already disappeared. Excellent panoramic views from the large summit cairn. Next, we removed the climbing skins and continued south towards Skipanuten. The descent to the small lake between the two summits was overall straightforward >>>

After leaving my bike behind at the trailhead for the roundtrip of Frøkjedalsvatnet, I followed the marked trail north along the lake before heading off-trail for the final 500 meters to the summit of Vardafjellet . The terrain was overall easy to traverse, but there were also areas with lots of moss-covered rocks with small gaps between them such that one had to tread carefully. Closer to the summit the terrain turned steeper and there were more trees and bushes to navigate around, but overall the summit was reached without any real issues. Two large old cairns at the Vardafjellet summit, however the actual summit is most likely the area around the tree just behind the largest cairn. The views from the summit where somewhat obscured by trees, but just a couple of meters to the south there were excellent views towards the south. From the summit >>>

Cycling: Våge - Reksteren - Våge

Distance:

After last year's excellent trip where I cycled from Våge to Reksteren to ascend Gjøvågsfjellet , I decided to repeat the success and return to Reksteren for the two summits I had not had the time to ascend last time, namely Vardafjellet and Dalstuva . Again, I first cycled to the Bergen city center, brought the bike with me on the bus to Halhjem, and from there took the ferry to Våge. Here I started the GPS and followed the same route as the year before, although now thankfully only to Smievoll and Frøkjedalsvatnet (and not (almost) all the way to Gjøvåg). Here I left the bike behind and continued north on the trail along the lake. See the separate trip report for the ascents of Vardafjellet and Dalstuva . Upon later returning to the bike, I cycled back the same way, making it to Våge with almost 30 minutes to spare before the ferry. After the break on the ferry, it was time for the bus ride back to Bergen, which last time >>>

Snilstveitøy: Veten and Eidsvikåsen

Last fall I figured out that it ought to be possible to use the high-speed passenger ferry from Bergen to Rosendal to visit both summits at Snilstveitøy in one hike. This however depended on the ferry's summer timetable and I did not manage try before it was too late. Half a year later it was now finally time to test if the plan could be executed successfully. I started by taking the ferry from Bergen to Snilstveitøy, although I almost ended up at Rosendal as the crew had forgotten that I was supposed to get off at Snilstveitøy (as the only passenger doing so). Thankfully I was able to inform them in time and a quick U-turn took care of the problem. At Snilstveitøy, I followed the gravel road west and soon came across the first sign for Veten . 200 meters later I arrived at the marked trailhead. >>>
