Stolåsen

Started by taking the bus to Førde (bus stop Førdespollen) and walking northwest along the road until reaching the tractor road to Langavatnet. I was happy to see footprints in the snow, hoping that these would continue all the way to the summit of Stolåsen .
Shortly after leaving the paved road I spotted the first deer, of which there would be numerous traces in the form of hoofprints throughout the hike. In fact they were soon more common that footprints. At the crossroads with the first signs for Stolåsen there was only one set of footprints coming from the planned direction. I still decided to turn left (west) at the sign and thus ascend Stolåsen from the south.
Less than a minute later I heard, and later saw, the second (and maybe a third?) deer, and with 2-3 deer spotted in less than half an >>>

I was dropped off at the parking lot at Hjortland and from there followed the snow-covered gravel road towards Norhytten (one can also arrive by bus to Flaktveitrinden, but then one has to carry the skis for about 2 km). The trip soon turned into backcountry skiing with only one or two tracks to follow made by earlier skiers.
As I got close to Norhytten these tracks also more or less disappeared, and so did the sun, plus it started snowing lightly, resulting in poor visibility. Still straightforward to reach Norhytten, but from there onwards to Borga it was a bit more complicated, and I had to reduce the speed to ensure that I was on the right course. Not the best views from the summit of Borga today. The visibility improved slightly for the descent, but for safety I still followed my own tracks.
I continued to Vikinghytten , via Grønetua . No tracks >>>
Rundemanen and Kvitebjørnen
- Date:
- 06.03.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 4:09h
- Distance:
- 15.7km
Started from the upper station of Fløibanen and after a quick detour to Skomakerdiket I took the shortest route to Brushytten , from where I followed Blåmansveien to arrive at Rundemanen .
I continued northwest across Kvitebjørnen all the way to Dræggehytten , before turning southeast to Ankerhytten . Here I tried skiing down the shortcut to Munkebotsvatnet, but ended up having to walk the last bit due to too many trees and not enough snow. The trip was completed by putting on the skis again and following Hellemyrstien back to Lønborg.
A very nice trip in perfect winter weather: blue skies and close to no wind. And in areas where there is usually not enough snow for skiing. There could have been just a little bit more snow at times though, as then one would not have to constantly be on the lookout for rocks...
Fløyen, Brushytten and Sandviksfjellet
- Date:

My plan had been to take Fløibanen and start skiing from the upper station, but upon arriving at Fløibanen there was a bit of a queue, so I decided to walk instead. At the upper station I put on my skis and made one round in "Lysløypen" before heading north for Sandviksfjellet . Getting to the summit of Sandviksfjellet on skis turned out to be harder than expected, as the path is not really made for skiing. The stretch from the summit towards to Sandvikspilen was however slightly better. From Sandvikspilen I tried a shortcut through the woods to reconnect with the gravel road. This turned out to be a mistake (too many trees and not enough snow), so not really a shortcut in the end. Finally, the trip was concluded by skiing down the snow-covered gravel road and taking Hellemyrstien to Lønborg.

Very nice winter weather in downtown Bergen, but as Ulriksbanen approached the upper station we started to see (and feel) the strong winds. (Some fellow skiers even decided to take the cable car back down again.) Luckily we could prepare the skis inside before exiting into the very strong southeastern winds. However, besides the strong winds the conditions were close to perfect, and in the small pockets where we could stay out of the wind it was easy to forget the cold wind and enjoy the views. We followed the standard winter route across Vidden, and after turning north, and later northwest, the wind was no longer a major factor.
After a short lunch break in Hyttelien, we continued to Rundemanen and from there followed Blåmansveien on the way down to Brushytten . At Rundemanen the strong winds could again be felt, but as >>>
Gullfjelltoppen and Kofta
- Date:
- 25.02.2018
- Characteristic:
- Backcountry skiing
- Duration:
- 7:12h
- Distance:
- 22.1km
Trip organized by the Norwegian Trekking Association . We started from the parking lot at Osavatnet on a beautiful and sunny winter day and followed the winter route up Tjørndalen towards Gullfjelltoppen . As we got close to Gullfjellhalsen a relatively dense fog started to appear, however after a short lunch break it cleared enough to continue to Gullfjelltoppen where the views were only partially limited by the fog.
But soon after leaving Gullfjelltoppen the fog reappeared, now even denser than before, and both maps and GPS had to be heavily conferred in order to find the route towards Kofta . In the end we did arrive at the summit of Kofta, although the fog resulted in extremely limited views. We therefore did not stay long and quickly returned the same way.
The initial plan had been to also visit Søre Gullfjelltoppen and Sydpolen , but this was rejected due to the dense fog, and we instead >>>
