Drangskollen
Tempted by the nice weather I left work a bit early and hopped on a bus to Kleppe (or rather buses and ferry), but sadly the sun did not stick around and was almost completely hidden behind gray clouds even before I got off the bus.
From the bus stop (called "Kleppe austre"), I continued north along the main road until reaching the relatively new gravel road to Haugo. By following the gravel road I easily arrived at Drangevågen, from where I continued on a trail to Drangen.
The first part of the route up the gorge behind Drangen was easy enough, there was even the odd trail marker. But further up the trail split, or perhaps more likely a deer track headed left and the trail continued to the right, and soon both trails pretty much disappeared.
I first tried the left option, but quickly realized it went nowhere, and returned to try the other option. This trail continued a bit further, and took me too a nice viewpoint where I could see back down to Drangen, but soon went nowhere as well.
Leaving it up to me to find my own way to the summit, which was not straightforward given a terrain consisting of dense low bushes in between steep small hills and marshes. But with some back and forth I finally made it to the summit. Or so I thought.
It turned out that the terrain had disoriented me, and I was actually on a slightly lower hill about 200 meters south of the real summit. Thankfully it was not too difficult to proceed to the real summit, which provided better views than expected, especially if moving a bit away from the summit itself.
For my descent, I followed more or less the same route, except for skipping the visit to my "alternative summit", and within not too long I was back at Drangen, from where I followed the trail and gravel road back to the main road. I still had plenty of time until the bus back to Bergen though, and ended up walking all the way to Fotlandsvåg before finally getting on the bus.
In summary, despite the very easy access to Drangen, the overall hike was not all that enjoyable. Perhaps partly due to the expected good weather disappearing before the hike could start, or maybe due to the almost two-hour bus ride each way.
But in any case, I’m pretty sure this will be my only visit to Drangskollen. The best parts of the trip were actually the nice views from the ferry and along the winding road down to Fotlandsvåg from Vestrevatnet, both before the sun disappeared. The hike itself is more easily forgotten.
