Bicycle ride to Mount Rundemanen

Date:
16.03.2015
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
1:48h
Distance:
16.4km

Bicycle ride to the top of mount Rundemanen in Bergen, Norway this evening. There's still some snow along this route, hence I had to roll my bicycle a few yards a couple of places when climbing the mountain; whereas downhill I could ride my bicycle all the way. It's quite cool having the Endomondo-App on the iPhone. Not only does it draw a map of the track you've been riding, it even measures the max speed of the bicycle when decending the mountain. I have a hard time believing that such a hard bicycle ride only consumes 646 kcal, however, as it does indeed feel like a lot more than that. Maybe I should upgrade to the Pro version of Endomondo to get the calorie consuption correct...

Kveldstur til Ulriken

Date:
29.10.2014
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Distance:
5.0km

On Mount Løvstakken with my Son Dag

Hike

The city of Bergen has traditionally been called The City Between Seven Mountains, though there’s traditionally also been a dispute as to which of the many mountains around the city actually comprises the seven. Nevertheless, Mount Løvstakken is generally agreed upon to be one of the seven, and I had therefore had a desire for some time to visit this mountain. I had been working in Bergen for a little less than a year at this time, despite living in a different part of Norway; and as my oldest son was visiting me in Bergen this weekend, I suggested to him that we ascend Mount Løvstakken on this day. We went by car from my Bergen apartment to the valley between Mount Løvstakken and Mount Olsokfjellet, i.e. to a location called Melkeplassen, and started trekking from there. The trail that >>>

On Mount Ulriken with my Son Dag

Date:
15.04.2014
Characteristic:
Hillwalk

I had been working at the university hospital in Bergen since september 2013, and now my oldest son Dag was visiting me in Bergen; and so in the afternoon we decided to hike up to the summit of Mount Ulriken. The mountain has a cable car that you may use to get up there, but our intention with the ascent was to get a workout, and so we abandoned the cable car, and started to climb along a trail just beneath were the cable car goes. The first part of our trail goes through forest, but as you approach the top of the mountain, the trees become more scarce, and all of a sudden it is gone. On Mount Ulriken, what seems to be the top of the mountain as you're climbing, isn't actually the summit of the mountain; it's just a knoll or a ridge a little bit west of the summit. The real top of the mountain >>>

To Mount Galdhøpiggen across Glacier Styggebreen

Date:
20.07.2006

This was the year that my wife said to me: Atle, this summer you'll have to take our kids with you and go somewhere on summer holiday without me, because i will have to work. She was studying to become a nurse at this time, and she had decided that she had to work at our local hospital almost all summer, to ensure she'd get a foot on the inside, as this would enhance her chances of getting a job there when summer was over. So, I decided to take our kids with me on a holiday destination that I knew it would be difficult to talk my wife into going on, i.e. Mount Galdhøpiggen, Norway's highest mountain. Talking my children into trekking Mount Galdhøpiggen was not as difficult as you'd think. They all love skiing in alpine ski arenas, and at this time, since it was summer, it had been a couple >>>
