Telemark Skiing to Mount Tarløysa in Rauma Municipality
- Dato:

- Turtype:
- Randonnée/Telemark

- Distanse:

The summit of Mount Tarløysa is located 1.086 m.a.m.s.l., but you don't have to ascend more than about 675 meters to get there, as the parking lot at Nyseter is located at an elevation of about 400 meters. To get there, you go by car to a village called Sandnes, a few kilometers before you reach Åfarnes, and there, at Sandnes, you take a little gravel road up the mountain side. The road has a few hairpin bends, and you have to pay a fee of about 60 NOK to be allowed to use it; but then, after a few minutes you arrive at the parking lot at Nyseter (image #1). As may be seen on the picture, the parking lot is quite spacious, though it is also used by cabin owners in the area. Snow had been quite scarce this winter (a month later it was abundant, though); and the advantage of setting out from >>>

On this day I went ski touring (by Telemark skies) to the summit of Mount Smørbottind. The mountain is not extremely high, only 1188 m.a.m.s.l., but you start out from a parking lot located at 315 meters, hence you do ascend almost 900 meters as you climb the mountain.
Due to the corona virus pandemic, the Norwegian society have been pretty much locked down for a few weeks. Our authorities have been encouraging hand cleaning and social distancing, as in most countries these days; and we are currently not allowed to travel abroad. Fortunately, though, we do have a lot of nice mountains in our own country, and the authorities have so far not imposed a curfew upon us. They discourage climbs in the higher mountains, as rescue resources may be limited these days, but it’s considered OK to climb >>>
Mountain skiing to Mount Skarven in Rauma Municipality

I've named this trip "Mountain skiing to Mount Skarven...", as it was neither a pure Telemark trip, nor was it a pure alpine touring ski trip. It was combined. My son Dag was testing out his touring ski equipment for first time, whereas I was still using my old Telemark equipment. We went to Skorgedalen in Rauma municipality in my son's car, and parked the car at the parking lot in the valley. The parking lot serves a little ski resort in the valley, as well as the many cabins / holiday cottages surrounding it; but the parking lot is huge, and the ski resort was currently closed due to the Covid-19 pandemia, hence finding a spot to park our car was no problem.
We got our equipment on, and started out. The ski trail towards Mount Skarven started right there, hence we didn't have to >>>
Telemark Skiing to Mount Litleskjerdingen

On this particular afternoon I actually intended to go skiing to Mount Blåskjerdingen, but while on my way up there I had to change my destination slightly due to lack of snow. Mount Blåskjerdingen is quite steep on most sides, with snow shelves and a high risk of avalanches here and there, but the south ridge of the mountain is less steep, and is located on the windward side of the mountain ; hence you're unlikely to run into an avalanche when ascending along that ridge, and so, as long as you stick to the south ridge, Mount Blåskjerdingen is considered a relatively safe mountain for winter skiing (as long as you don't go upon the large snow shelves on the east side [i.e. the leeward side] of the summit area). On the other hand, as the south ridge is located on the windward side, snow tends >>>
Skiing to Mount Høgsvora along with my daughter

Mount Høgsvora in the county of Møre & Romsdal is considered a relatively safe mountain to go ski touring as far as the avalanche risk is concerned, as long as you ascend the mountain along the usual route, i.e. the one you'll find on our GPS tracking of this trip. We drove to a camping site of Svarttjønnhaugen in a valley called Vaksvikdalen , me and my daughter Vår vaarsolholm (Vår Solholm) . This camping site has some cabins for hire, but the important thing for us was that they allow people to park on their site for a little fee, even if you're not going to hire a cabin or a spot for your tent; and once you've paid the fee, you're free to use their toilet facilities, which may be nice when you get back down from the mountain. When snow is scarce, you may drive all the way up to Sollisætra, which I once did >>>
Hiking to Mount Geitnausa with my daughter

The town of Ålesund is located on four islands in the county of Møre & Romsdal, beautifully, in between fjords and mountains. One of the four islands, the one called Uksenøya, has a mountain ridge generally referred to as Emblemsfjellet [i.e. the Emblem mountain, after a village called Emblem on the south side of the mountain. This mountain actually have a number of peaks, i.e. Høgkubben, Geitnausa, Vasstrandegga and Merafta .
Now, I've actually been to all of these summits, but the advantage of this mountain is that it is close to the town, and it's easy to get there whenever you want to. So, we drove to a place called Myrdalen, in the part of the town that is called Spjelkavika; and then we set out from there, aiming for the peak called Geitnausa. There actually is a nice forest road >>>
To Mount Vasstrandegga in Rainy Weather

We had a hike to the mountain called Vasstrandegga on this day, my son and I. We started out from a parking lot in a hollow called Sirigrova . This parking lot is mainly used by trekkers intending to ascend one of the nearby mountains, hence it wasn't the first time we parked there. There's a little mountain road winding its way through the valley Østremsdalen up to a cluster of cottages called Østremssætra , once used for caretakers of domestic animals (mainly sheep) when they were grazing in the mountains during summer. We followed the road up to Østremssætra, then took left along a tiny forest path, which we followed upwards into the mountains. We lost the trail at some point during our climb, due to some slight amount of snow here and there, but it didn't really matter much, as we had >>>
Another Hike to Mount Gamlemsveten

In winter time, whenever snow is to scarce for mountain skiing, and yet too abundant for an ordinary mountain hike on foot; then Mount Gamlemsveten is a very good option. There has been built a huge TV broadcasting antenna at the very summit, and there are even some other telecommunication installations up there as well. A construction road was once built up to the summit for the purpose of bringing material like plank, concrete and iron up there when the TV antenna was built; hence even when there's quite some snow, the ground beneath is pretty even, and not as stony as it usually is in mountains like this. On the other hand, the road up there is usually not plowed, and cars are not allowed apart from those that take part in maintenance work on the installations up there; hence you are very >>>
