Schober & Frauenkopf

Date:
09.07.2015
Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
1:45h
Distance:
3.5km

We parked right next to Forsthaus Wartenfels and ascended to the ruin Wartenfels that towers above the Forsthaus (only a few minutes up). From there, it is a quick ascent up to Schober, from where one enjoyes exceptional views in all directions. The matter of fact that Schober is kind of the northernmost (somehow) higher mountain frees extended views in many directions! From there, we connected to Frauenkopf, which is only a few steps away from Schober. From there, one gets back to Forsthaus Wartenfels via a good-to-walk path, mostly through the forest underneath Schober. In total, this hike is short and rewarding. At a few places, there are steel ropes that help to ascend/descend and at some very few places you have to watch you step, when getting up, down, or around. With a little >>>

Grosser & Kleiner Sonnstein

Hillwalk
Duration:
3:00h
Distance:
5.4km

We started with two cars, leaving one a small parking spot south of Traunkirchen (if you drive from north, for ex., Gmunden, in the driection of Bad Ischl, then you first cut short Traunkirchen through a tunnel -- shortly afterwards you pass through a very short new tunnel and then the parking spot is on the right). Then we drove further, with the other car, towards Ebensee. As soon as we entered Ebensee, even before crossing the Traun, we turned right at the first opportunity (onto Hauptstrasse). After only a short distance -- basically at the first regular option to turn right, again -- we turned right (onto Langbarthstrasse). From there, we turn right again, into Kirchengasse -- this turn is not obvious (the turn is very sharp and Kirchengasse is very narrow). Right next to the church >>>

Traunstein

Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
6:00h
Distance:
14.7km

Starting from Traunsee (~450m, southeast from Gmunden), up the Naturfreundesteig (climbing trail, category A/B), we first reached Traunsteinhaus (1575m, still quite new after a recent upgrading). It took a bit more than 2 hours, but easily this could be more, depending on the climbing conditions -- it's more than 1000m up a substantially steep climbing path! Then, we connected to Gmundner Hütte (1660m), another impressive house on top of this prominent mountain! The actual top, Traunstein (1691m) is then quite near and easy to reach. Down we took the trail towards Mair Alm, which is very steep, but good to go. All in all, including an extended break on Gmundner Hütte, this was about 6+ hours of hiking. Very rewarding! Up from Bad Ischl (where the cable car starts, at 470m, via Bildweg) to Katrinalm (1413m), which is a nice, steep hike up (about 1000m up) and then -- after some nice rest with served food and drinks -- quickly up to Katrin-Kreuz (1542m) and Elferkogel (1601m). Down, then, very comfortably with the cable car. :-)

Hochleckenhaus (Höllengebirge)

Date:

Characteristic:
Hillwalk
Duration:
4:00h
Distance:
12.2km

Starting from Taferlklaussee (763m), we first ascended to Hochleckenhaus (1574m) via a well-marked path (note: the start is somehow unclear -- mostly due to many other small trails near and around Taferlklausssee). After a nice and refreshing rest at Hochleckenhaus -- yes, with served food and drinks! :-) -- we descended towards Steinbach am Attersee (via Geissalm and Stieg -- the 2nd option for hiking to Steinbach), which offers terrific views -- not at the least to Attersee! The path down from Höllengebirge is (partially) steep and it's hundreds of meters straight down next to the path in selected places (you better are not afraid of heights there). All in all, a great hike! :-) Selected photos are available as a Google photo album .

From Weissenbach to the Haleswiessee and back

Date:
04.07.2005
Characteristic:
Hike
Duration:
4:00h
Distance:
6.2km

We started from the Waldsiedlung in Weissenbach am Attersee and ascended on the southern side of the valley until we came to an intermediate height, almost meeting Loidlbach, which nearby takes a turn to the left and towards the Burgaubach further down (west of Weissenbach). Instead of continuing further up to one of the nearby mountains, we instead crossed a saddle to get further towards Haleswiessee, a nice little lake, surrounded by the mountains around it. We enjoyed some time up there, before we returned, basically along the same path that we had taken up first. See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway .

Hillwalk
Duration:
3:00h
Distance:
4.4km

We started from Weissenbach am Attersee and ascended via the western ridge of the Höllengebirge up to Schober (Kleiner Schoberstein). Clearly, this is a nice (and not so long) hill-walk for those, who are enjoying some good time at lake Attersee! See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway .

Höllengebirge with Alberfeldkogel

Characteristic:
Hike
Duration:
5:00h
Distance:
5.1km

We took the car to Ebensee at the lake Traunsee and then the cable car, which swiftly lifted us up to Feuerkogel 1575mosl! From there, we first walked "along the edge" (Höllengebirge falls off quite steeply in northern direction there, offering amazing views of the beautiful Salzkammergut, in particular with Traunsee etc.). This way, we made it to Alberfeldkogel, from which we enjoyed a wonderful view (mostly in northern direction). The weather was just so and so and due to the height it clearly was not very warm. We then made a round back to the cable car, hiking a little more "inlands". It was fun to also explore the still remaining patches of old snow (in end of June!). Biking from Salzburg to Wien 2: Steinbach-Wachau

Date:
15.08.1996
Characteristic:
Bike trip
Duration:
10:15h
Distance:
203.6km

After two extra days at Attersee, I finally decided to leave the Salzkammergut and cycle to Vienna, making good distances where possible. Starting in Steinbach am Attersee at about 8am in the morning, I arrived in Weissenkirchen near Wels at about 11:20 (about 74km from Steinbach). Without much delay, I continued further and arrived near Linz at about 1pm (a bit above 100km from Steinbach). Eventually, I made it to Wachau, altogether, accumulating about 200km of cycling on this day (in a little above 10h). Clearly, I tested my limits with this attempt to get as close to Wien as possible. More details about the entire bike-trip are available via a separate web page . Route details about four longer bike rides in/near the Alps are summarized on a separate web page . See also the related FB-page Hiking around Bergen, Norway .

After some nice time in Salzburg, I then started my bike-trip home (from Salzburg to Wien). On the first day, I "just" made it to Attersee, but enjoyed a few extra-turns to see some more places in the particularly nice Salzkammergut, east of Salzburg. After about 115km of cycling, I then came to Steinbach am Attersee, where I stayed for two more days to enjoy the lake and its surrounding a bit further.
