Cycling to Askøy with Folleseåsen
- Date:
- 27.05.2017
- Characteristic:
- Bike trip - mixed
- Duration:
- 3:00h
- Distance:
- 30.8km
We started our little cycling trip in the south of Fyllingsdalen and took Bjørgeveien towards Loddefjord. From there, we connected to Kjøkkelvikveien and at Nybø, we connected to Sundby Hvorups vei, which brings cyclists (and pedestrians) to the southern end of the large bridge to Askøy (drivers take a tunnel). We crossed over the Askøy-bridge and followed the sidewalk to the place, where a bigger bus-stop is. There, right behind the bus-stop, a steep path is leading downwards to Skarholmvegen. Turning sharply right, once down there, we took Skarholmvegen towards the west on the southern edge of Askøy. We followed this road until we came to Strusshamn, where we continued northover (and upwards), until we got to Follesevegen. There, we continued again westwards (a little), until >>>
Dronninga on Askøy
- Date:
- 20.05.2017
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 2:00h
- Distance:
- 7.6km
We took the car from Bergen to Askøy and continued northwards on road #562 in the direction of Ravnanger. At Haugland, right after crossing over Loneelvi and then passing under a small bridge, we left the main road to Hauglandsmyra, where we parked at once.
In order to get to Dronninga, we walked first along Hauglandsmyra (the one part of it, which first leads northwards, between houses on the left and some meadow on the right). This brought us to Rispeleitet, which eventually leads in eastern direction (then really towards Dronninga). At the very end of Rispeleitet (at Kolbeinsmyra) the paved road becomes a stone road (maybe not for regular cars), which we followed all to the end (repeatedly one also finds signs, leading the way towards Dronninga). Very close to the "top" of >>>
Askøy-cycling with Åsebøåsen

I took my bicycle from Varden in the southwest of Fyllingsdalen and followed first Bjørgeveien towards Loddefjord. Shortly before getting there, I first thought to take the pedestrians' bridge over Lyderhornveien in order to get to Bjørndalsbakken. I was mislead, there, however, since the according signs were crossed out. Thus, I thought that I had no other choice than to use Lyderhornveien in order to get to Loddefjord (not the nicest street to cycle). From Loddefjord, I continued along Lyderhornveien in northern direction (here it's fully OK to cycle), until I got to Kjøkkelvikveien, which I followed further northwards. Via Krabbedalsflaten, I got further to Sundby Hvorups vei, which I cycled upwards and over a minor top in order to connect to the big Askøy-bridge (only possible >>>
Gravdalsfjellet, Olsokfjellet, and Damsgårsfjellet
- Date:

- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 2:15h
- Distance:
- 6.1km
We took the car to Laksevåg/Lyngbø and parked right at the beginning of Eliasmarken. From there, we started to walk; first up to Lyngbøveien and so further into Nygårdslien (and upwards this road). At the upper end of Nygårdslien, we connected to the hiking path, which starts/ends there. Quickly, we ascended (moderately steeply) to the height where the path starts to flatten out towards the saddle between Gravdalsfjellet (in the southwest) and Damsgårdsfjellet (in the northeast). At the point, where four paths meet, we turned right (into southwestern direction) and continued our ascent to Gravdalsfjellet. Shortly later, we arrived at the top of Gravdalsfjellet and enjoyed an all-around view from there. From there, we first walked into the direction of Viggohytten, but turned left >>>
Gaustadfjellet, Litlafjellet, Bårafjellet, Øyjordsfjellet

With a very promising spring day ahead, we decided to try some new top(s) in the north of Meland, i.e., Gaustadfjellet and others. We took road E39 northwards from Bergen, crossed Nordhordlandsbrua, and connected then to the small road #245 that departs from the road to Frekhaug right after the bridge to Meland. We then followed this narrow road northwards until we arrived at Ådland. We parked, where Kyrkjesundvegen departs in northern direction.
On the map, we had seen that approximately 200m south of this point, a path up to Gaustadfjellet should be possible to find---getting there, however, required a little bit of good orientation (and one more look at the map, actually). Once on this path, however, the ascent to Gaustadfjellet is straight-forward and quick. From the top of Gaustadfjellet, >>>
Veten i Åsane via Skagen
- Date:
- 13.04.2017
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:00h
- Distance:
- 9.4km
Inspired by a recent hike of a colleague , I decided for a tour up to Veten i Åsane today. I found the idea to include also Skagen i Åsane attractive and thus planned for a little round, accordingly.
To start, I took the car to Åsane (along E39) and then, near IKEA, I connected to a very narrow, small road, which leads towards Dalabygda in the northwest of Langavatnet (where the old post-path starts to ascend between Høgstefjellet and Veten i Åsane). Next to the few houses there, a parking place has been built as a convenient starting point for hikers along the old post-path.
In order to make the ascent to Skagen a little more interesting, I thought that I could try to go there via the smaller hilltops, which one can find between Langavatnet and Skagen, i.e., Glanten, Alteret, and Husaberget. From looking at the >>>
Short walk in Kanadaskogen
- Date:
- 02.04.2017
- Characteristic:
- Hike
- Duration:
- 1:00h
- Distance:
- 3.5km
We simply headed for Kanadaskogen (from Varden) and explored some paths aside of the more regularly used ones. After all, this was just a short walk in order to get some fresh air. How nice to have Kanadaskogen right around the corner! :-)

Wet Litlesotra (very wet!)
- Date:
- 25.03.2017
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:00h
- Distance:
- 8.5km
I took the car along road #555 towards the west from Bergen, crossing the Sotra-bridge to Litlesotra. There, I continued to Straume (where also the Sator Center is), and followed the small road #209 towards the north from there. I passed the places, where one could drive to Foldnes and to Anglavik, later, and arrived in a small place called Vågo shortly after.
I left the car in Vågo and started my hike in southern direction. Very soon, I had to leave the path, which I had started on, and continued through the wild (as expected from studying the map in advance). The first (nearby) target was Storanipa, just south of Vågo. On its western side, there are steep cliffs, but ascending to it from any of the other directions is straight forward. Next, I had already planned to cross over (in >>>
Møsnuken from Tveit
- Date:
- 18.03.2017
- Characteristic:
- Hillwalk
- Duration:
- 3:15h
- Distance:
- 5.5km
Via Fana, we first drove to Osøyro, before we continued along road 137 (in northeastern direction). We passed Heggland and continued to Tveit, where we parked the car near to the point, where the street passes over Spannsteigselva, coming down from Gjemdalsskaret (at the end of our hike, we should come down exactly there, too).
Our plan was to ascend towards Møsnuken via Tveitaberget. To do so, we first found a little forest road, which departs from Hegglandsdalsvegen a little southwest of where we parked (i.e., back along the street, which we had come there). This forest road leads upwards (mostly in western direction) and brings one conveniently to a height of about 150mosl. There, after an extended left swing, the road splits into a somewhat more prominent part, leading upwards in northern >>>
Along Sælevatnet
- Date:
- 12.03.2017
- Characteristic:
- Walk
- Duration:
- 0:45h
- Distance:
- 2.3km
I started from Varden and got down from Vardeveien to Fyllingsdalsveien near the bridge, which crosses over Fyllingsdalsveien from Vardeveien (and over to Skitnakastet). After crossing Fyllingsdalsveien, I quickly descended towards Sælevatnet. Then, I followed the shoreline, first in southern direction, following the outer edge of this small peninsula, separated from "the rest of the world" by Fyllingsdalsveien. After having completed this surrounding, I got back to Skitnakastet, where I took the small bridge back to Vardeveien. From there, it was then only a few meters back to the start.
